Location: 14382 Astronautics Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 92647 Responsibilities: Work closely with the fermentation, engineering, and production departments in the development of fermentation processes. Responsible for executing projects within a collaborative team environment to optimize fermentation and scale up conditions for novel gas fermentation processes. Design, conduct, and analyze complex experiments with minimal supervision and adhere to project deadlines. Design and perform experiments to evaluate environmental conditions, culture medium formulations, and feeding strategies to improve product titer, rate and yield in small scale and pilot scale bioreactors. Perform gas mass transfer and kinetic modeling, combined with experimental data and stoichiometry, to predict and improve process performance at all scales. Design scale-down model to simulate fermentation environmental condition of commercial-scale vessel, and integrate and interpret fermentation results among shake flask, lab-scale, pilot-scale, and commercial-scale system. Manage tech transfer activities from lab to pilot and production, providing on-floor support as needed. Provide routine progress and developmental reports for assessment. Conduct data analysis on fermentation batch processes summarizing key performance criteria. Contribute to the development and improvement of laboratory infrastructure and protocols to continuously improve efficiency of data collection, analysis, and management. Educ./experience: Masters degree or foreign equivalent in Chemical Engineering or related field, plus 1 year of post-baccalaureate experience as a Fermentation Scientist, Process Engineer, or in a related position. Experience must include: Operation and monitoring fermentation equipment of 20L and 30L fermenters, centrifugation, and performing sterile techniques; preparation of fermentation medium, buffer solutions, consumable materials to support experiment execution; lab processes and pilot scales, process development and characterization, scale-up and tech transfer to commercial manufacturing; process troubleshooting and qualification of alternative raw materials and components.
