SUMMARY

Family Service League is seeking a full-time Family Support Specialist for the Smart Start program. The Family Support Specialist will visit families twice a week in a pre-screened home setting to model and reinforce positive interaction between the child and parent/caregiver. The Family Support Specialist will work with families, caregivers, and communities to support early literacy, school readiness and early opportunities. The Family Support Specialist will be handling cases in the Bellport and/or Wyandanch communities. Travel is required. Must be able to drive personal vehicle to and from home visits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Family Support Specialist will complete a minimum of 16 hours of training delivered by the Supervisor prior to beginning home visits.
  • Visit with families in the family's home on a twice weekly basis, demonstrating reading, play and verbal interaction behaviors with two-year-old and three-year-old children and the parent of primary caregiver.
  • The Family Support Specialist will complete the required paperwork on a weekly basis.
  • Attend and participate in weekly supervisory meetings, staff meetings, individual supervision and training, as is required.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of experience working in human services required. Bachelor's degree in human services or related field preferred.

At least 1 year of prior experience working with young children and parents in a community-based organization required.

Must have demonstrated knowledge of the community being served.

Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, required.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, required.

Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality required.

Strong judgement and problem-solving skills, including knowing when to seek help, required.

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

Valid and clean NYS Driver's License required.

Travel is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs.

Must be able to drive personal vehicle to and from home visits.
