POSITION SUMMARY

The Fab Shop Welder III/ Fabricator is responsible for joining, fabricating, and repairing metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques. Interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Produces welds to meet ASME code and engineering spec requirements.
  • Stamps all tacks and welds with code identification as required.
  • Measures, marks, burns, cuts, bevels, etc., material to prepare for welding. Allowing for shrinkage and expansion.
  • Performs welding in all positions, makes various types of welds such as lap, "V" butt, fillet, etc.
  • Uses carbon arc to back gouge welds on pressure vessels and other production and tooling requirements.
  • Welds to repair machine parts, guards, piping, fittings, etc. when necessary.
  • Cleans, chips, grinds, etc. work before and after weld.
  • Sets up and operates various types of welding machines, including MIG, TIG, STICK, to fit and weld any type of material. Setup includes but is not limited to the setting of voltage and amperage, changing electrode tips and weld wire, and replenishing gas supply by hook up to full line of gas. Operations is by pedal, lever, button, etc.
  • Maintains and tracks operating data such as quantity, time, item number, inventory, and heat numbers as required.
  • Operates a hoist or manually moves, loads, and unloads material and/or product.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, such as machinery lubrication and cleaning.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly manner. This involves sweeping, mopping, emptying trash cans, etc.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards and reports unsafe conditions or acts to their supervisor immediately
  • Adheres to all safety protocols and regulations including wearing appropriate attire/footwear, utilizing personal protective equipment as required, and participating in accident investigations.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • AWS Certification for GMAW SMAW preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience fabricating structural steel and railings.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Completed formal education in required welding techniques or equiv. experience
  • Basic math, algebra, and geometry skills
  • Proficient at pipe and structural layout and fit-up techniques
  • Ability to "Use and Read" required inspection and measuring instruments
  • Good communication and organization skills
  • Ability to lead other welders and team members to complete a project
  • Must be a self-starter, self-motivated, and customer focused.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing. The job is performed outdoors, indoors and in various geographic locations.
