Position Summary SURVICE Engineering is currently seeking a Experimental Mechanics of Materials Test Lab Manager to support our Aberdeen Research Operation. You will accelerate your career and become an integral team member within the defense community. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Operate and maintain the Sciences of Extreme Materials Division's (SEMD) mechanical test lab facilities including servo-hydraulic, electromechanical, and impact test systems, as well as environmental chambers, oscilloscopes, and other supporting equipment Maintain and improve lab safety in conjunction with the ARL Safety Office by establishing and continuously improving standard operating procedures (SOP) Ensure the proper training of lab users in the safe operation of mechanical, servo, and impact test systems as well as other laboratory equipment. Maintain accurate approved user access lists for equipment. Ensure lab equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and up-to-date Suggest, plan and implement upgrades and improvements to lab facilities to increase safety, efficiency, and capabilities in support of SEMD mission priorities. Plan and execute mechanical testing campaigns using standard experimental protocols (e.g. ASTM) as well as unique experiments required in a research and development environment. Operate and maintain the applicable assigned laboratory space including procurement of materials and equipment needed for lab functionality. Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts. Minimum Qualifications of Experimental Mechanics of Materials Test Lab Manager Associate's Degree in and 8+ years of relevant experience or Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of relevant experience in Materials Sciences or Engineering Discipline. Background in materials science or engineering related to materials testing Practical experience operating and maintaining mechanical, servo, and impact testing systems Experience in instrumentation for mechanical testing (e.g. DIC, high speed data acquisition, LVDT, strain gage, soldering, low voltage electrical systems) Experience designing and executing mechanical experiments for materials including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites under a range of environmental conditions Computer-aided design software (e.g. Solidworks, AutoCAD) Data analysis tools such as Excel and MATLAB Desired Experience:
• Experience in a materials research and development environment.
• Practical machine tool experience (e.g. end mill, lathe)
• Experience in other laboratory-relevant manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, water jet, or laser cutting.
• Experience in writing/maintaining standard operating procedures to ensure efficient and safe operation of mechanical testing equipment
• High speed testing such as split-Hopkinson pressure bar including high-speed imaging and instrumentation
• Automated testing and/or collaborative robotics
• Microsoft SharePoint web design
• Experience in technical communication including oral presentations, technical reports and articles.
