Summary/objective As a member of the Technical Support team the Desktop Technician will provide a high quality customer service experience to the faculty, staff and students at Great Plains Technology Center. The technician assists in the maintenance of the school system's network components and works with the Network Administrator to help ensure the effective operation of the systems at the school.
Essential functions - Install, diagnose, repair, maintain and upgrade all PC software/hardware to ensure optimal workstation performance
- Serve as the first point of contact to resolve IT technology problems for staff
- Monitor work queue
- Deployment of new computers
- Troubleshooting (in person, by telephone, or via email)
- PC, printer and copier
- Operating System and Software
- Moves, additions, changes, and deletions to school PCs.
- Support of equipment at 2 school campuses (Lawton and Frederick) and 3 off-site classrooms with travel required between work sites
- Supervision of contractors installing network cable, cameras and door locks
- Troubleshoot system failures or bugs and provide solutions to restore functionality
- Arrange maintenance sessions to discover and mend inefficiencies
- Keep records of repairs and fixes for future reference
- Offer timely technical support to end-users and teach instruct users how to utilize computers correctly
- Other duties as assigned by the superintendent or designee
Competencies - Subject Knowledge: Strong understanding of computer hardware components, including desktops, laptops, printers, and peripherals. Troubleshooting skills for hardware and software issues. Basic understanding of networking concepts, including IP addresses, DNS, DHCP, and basic network troubleshooting.
- Communication Skills: Ability to maintain accurate records of support requests, troubleshooting steps, and resolutions. Ability to collaborate with other IT team members and departments to resolve complex issues.
- Professionalism: Effective time management skills to handle multiple support requests and prioritize tasks appropriately. Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and tools as the IT landscape evolves. A commitment to staying up-to-date with industry trends and developments through self-learning and professional development opportunities.
Supervisory responsibilities None
Work environment The desktop technician typically works in a classroom environment, but the mission of the school may require work in other settings including outdoors. A standard workweek as assigned by administration is required, but evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate activities.
Physical demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to remain stationary at times, frequently move about their office, building and/or across campus, travel to offsite locations and communicate with staff, parents and students. Employee will be required to move/position objects up to 50 lbs and to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.
Travel required Occasional travel within and outside of the Great Plains Technology Center district may be required for work at other school sites, professional development and participation in other Great Plains Technology Center activities.
Required education and experience
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Excellent troubleshooting skills
- Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledgeable in Microsoft Windows 10 Operating Systems and Microsoft Office/Office 365
- PC deployment experience
- Knowledgeable in Apple, Android, and other mobile devices
- Experience with MAC OS
Preferred education and experience - PC Technician with at least 2 years' experience
- Experience with wireless and other networking devices
- Relevant certifications (e.g. A+ and/or Security+)
