The Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for commercial construction projects. This role involves analyzing project plans and specifications, coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers, and compiling comprehensive proposals that support the company's efforts to secure profitable work. The Estimator plays a critical role in the preconstruction phase, ensuring that bids are competitive, complete, and aligned with project requirements and company goals
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze construction drawings, specifications, and related documents to prepare thorough and accurate estimates for commercial projects
- Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to obtain competitive pricing and ensure accurate scope coverage
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and material lists, including labor, materials, equipment, and indirect costs
- Solicit, review, and qualify bids from subcontractors and suppliers for completeness and compliance with project requirements
- Coordinate with project managers, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to clarify scope, resolve discrepancies, and ensure alignment on project requirements
- Prepare and submit timely and accurate proposals, including all required documentation and supporting information
- Assist in the development and presentation of bids and proposals to clients, including both public and private sector opportunities
- Monitor and incorporate current market trends, cost fluctuations, and regulatory requirements into estimates
- Identify and assess risks, contingencies, and opportunities to optimize the company's position in securing work
- Support post-bid activities, including scope reviews, value engineering, and change order pricing as needed
- Maintain proficiency in estimating software and internal systems
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent field experience
- Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in commercial construction estimating
- Strong understanding of construction means, methods, and materials, especially in commercial building environments
- Proficient in reading and interpreting construction documents, drawings, and specifications
- Advanced analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences
- Proficiency with construction estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external partners
- Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in work product
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
