Substitute Food Service Worker

An ESS substitute food service worker plays an integral role in preparing and delivering meals to students in a clean, safe, and healthy environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties assigned by the head cook/school administration in the selection, preparation, and serving of food
  • Maintain a clean and safe food service environment; perform sanitation duties to ensure that all equipment is thoroughly cleaned according to state regulations
  • Store, utilize, and dispose of food and supplies following federal, state, local, and district regulations
  • Assist with the accurate keeping of records and ordering of supplies
Food Prep
  • Read and follow standardized recipes.
  • Prepare, set-up, and service food and beverages
  • May assist in the preparation of assembling lunches or packing lunches.
  • May set up serving trays, etc., or serve hot food or other food items.
Inventory
  • Ensure that assigned food items are ready in the proper quantity.
  • Confer with food service team members and supervisors about the quantities and varieties of food items to be prepared and served.
  • Participate in inventory, receipt, and storage of supplies, food, and equipment.
  • Perform record-keeping tasks promptly: record food and equipment temperatures accurately and legibly complete required documentation.
  • May check, store, and inventory supplies according to department procedures.
Point of Sale (POS)
  • Perform cash handling tasks; use POS System to sell food and beverages; count cash drawer at the end of the day and enter data into the POS System.
  • Accurately complete the bank deposit slips
  • May count and record monies and meals served.
Safety and Sanitation
  • Adhere to food safety and sanitation standards
  • Maintain all areas of food service operations in an organized, clean, and sanitary manner, including preparation areas and equipment.
  • Ensure serving and display areas are kept stocked, sanitized, and arranged in an orderly manner.
  • Clean and wash dishes, utensils, equipment, work areas, and tables.
Abilities and skills
  • Ability to maintain consistent punctual and regular attendance
  • Follow verbal directions and read and write instructions in English
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties assigned to walk or stand on hard flooring for long periods correctly demonstrates sufficient strength, mobility and range of motion to arm lift 31 lbs and floor lift 31 lbs.
  • Ability to perform basic math and simple record-keeping with accuracy
  • Operate a cash register and computerized POS system
  • Good customer service skills
  • Use of computer and assorted software programs
  • Able to work independently and with the team good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with administrators, staff students, and the community in English
Physical Requirements:

Physical abilities include the usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions and work required the following physical demands stand for an extended period operate kitchen tools utensils and equipment requiring repetitive hand motion inspect documents and other written materials efficiently move about the kitchen cafeteria and school site move lift push and or carry large or small objects weighing up to 31 lbs in the school cafeteria food storage area or freezer some climbing and balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching handling and touching and or filling manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer.

Significant physical abilities include ability to sit at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations for extended periods of time, see and read with or without visual aids laws and codes rules policies and other printed material computer screens and print outs here and understand speech at normal room levels and hear and understand speech on the telephone speak and audible tones so that others may understand clearly and normal conversations.

  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud employees in this position will be required to work in a fast-paced cafeteria kitchen environment and come in direct contact with district staff students, and the public.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A.A. degree, 48 units beyond the high school diploma, or passage of district county test in reading, math, writing per the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
  • TB test clearance
  • Department of Justice background check
