Description of Job

About the Work Unit

The Survey Unit is responsible for research and field collection of boundary and topographic data sets to be used by the Department of Transportation (DOT) Engineering and Plans Units to design or upgrade public road systems, and to provide base map information for the development of plan sets. The Survey Unit works with multiple engineering consultants to facilitate the collection of survey data and utility locates. In addition, this Unit responds to the public by providing information regarding Right of Way plans and helps answer questions or concerns.

About the Position

The Survey Technician will provide support to the Engineer Physical Science Technicians (EPST), Professional Land Surveyor I (PLS I) and Professional Land Surveyor II (PLS II) by setting up and operating survey equipment and software files for project control, conducting field investigations for locating land and property corner evidence in TMOSS format. This position also provides office support in processing data collected in the field and assists in preparing maps, plans and documents based on field inspection.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
•   Operates survey instruments including but not limited to the following: Theodolites, Electronic Distance Meter (EDM)s, Global Position System (GPS) equipment and Digital Levels;
•   Collect topographic data for the production of high precision control points and for the preparation of topographic maps for design, highway lands and properties;
•   Train the Engineer Physical Sciences Assistant in field surveying practices and methods;
•   Determine if the equipment is operating within the allowed manufacturer's specifications and CDOT tolerances;
•   Assist the PLS I's with the layout of initial project control;
•   Assures the reliability of field data by checking for errors in equipment settings, data transmission, data collection and understanding the importance of properly calibrated equipment;
•   Operates computer software including MicroStation, InRoads, and Trimble Business Center.
•   Assist the EPST's and PLS's with all office phases of surveying services including but not limited to reviewing the following: project control (including horizontal and vertical control), topography, to ensuring the proper amount of field data is obtained in order to make the correct property boundary determination;
•   Assist EPST's and PLS's with performing checks of consultant fieldwork, including visual inspection and measurement of monuments;
•   Reduces and directs the reduction of data files from field survey work using OpenRoads Designer (ORD);
•   Uses and operates GPS receivers for OPUS observations/solutions and GPS static observations;
•   Will learn to upload GPS files into the online NGS database and into Trimble Business Center;
•   .Checks survey instruments on National Geodetic Survey Survey (NGS) Calibrated Base Line (CBL);
•   Checks and upgrades software for data collection equipment;
•   Assures equipment is kept clean and in good working order;
•   Learns various data transmission formats between data collectors, total stations radio and GPS receivers and ORDn to ensure that data is downloading correctly;
•   Organize, sort and file Survey/Right-of-Way plans, plats, maps, title information and field survey information for the Survey/Right-of-Way Plan Units and Project Control Diagrams;
•   Other duties as assigned. Work Environment:
•   Primarily 7:00 am - 3:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
•   Travel required to and from project sites for field survey work, training and meetings on projects
•   Approximately 60% spent in the field, 40% spent in the office
•   Required to perform survey fieldwork over variable terrain, in all weather conditions, and to work in proximity to heavy traffic.
•   Required to operate CDOT vehicles
•   Occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications
•  A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). AND
•  at least four years of experience providing l and survey assistance to licensed professional engineers or a professional land surveyor

OR

Education and Experience:
•   A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least 4 years.
•   Education from an accredited college or university with coursework in surveying, engineering, geomatics/geospatial, or title abstracting or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.
•   Experience providing land survey assistance to licensed professional engineers or a professional land surveyor.
