The Engineering Intern is responsible for aiding staff within the Engineering Division of the Department of Public Works and Development Services. Duties anticipated include project plan reviews, project meeting attendance, project inspections, field data gathering, and project inspections as needed.Education / higher education: High School diploma or equivalent. One year of college coursework in any engineering field and currently following a course of study in any engineering field. For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Civil engineering or a related field Minimum number of years of directly related experience: none Education and/or experience preferences: Preference would be provided to students studying civil engineering. Must be enrolled in a college or university at the time of application and while employed as an intern must be completing a degree in a Bachelor's or Master's program in engineering with preferences to students studying civil engineering. Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None Note For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards. Required certifications, licenses or registrations: None Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: NoneKnowledge: a basic understanding of design concepts, construction plans and specifications, mathematics, geometry and civil engineering standards and practices; Skills: Must be able to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Skills in reading and interpreting engineering plans or reports, technical engineering specifications, standards, methods and procedures. Abilities: Research, read, interpret, and work from field notes, plans, specifications, and similar data Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: This position works with engineering staff on various assignments on an as needed basis. This position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.The following functions are typical for this position. Assists project personnel with engineering plan and specification reviews Conducts field data gathering for ongoing capital improvement projects Assists project staff with construction progress review meetings and inspections Assists with traffic study data collection, analysis, and report writing Traffic inventory data collection: signal and ITS infrastructure, street lighting, road markings and traffic control devices Assist with maintenance activity request verifications Performs traffic project inspection with the traffic staff Assists with the review of plans and specifications for land development projects to ensure compliance with City standards as well as accuracy of cost estimates Assists with pre-construction meetings to establish project protocols and compliance with State and City construction standards, and coordinates with City staff, design and inspection teams Assists project staff with construction progress review meetings and inspections
