Engineer Principal (Project Management) Salary Range: $40.82 - $62.17 / hourly; $85,232 - $129,810 / annually

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) offers employees a good work and personal life balance. This position has the flexibility to work a hybrid telework schedule or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor. Relocation assistance may also be available.

Detroit Lakes has 412 lakes within a 25-mile radius with a 1-mile-long public sand beach and is only 40 minutes to Fargo/Moorhead. You'll find year-round recreation including skiing, fishing, bird watching, hiking, biking, skating, mountain biking, snowmobiling, boating and 8 area golf courses.

The Detroit Lakes school district includes two elementary schools, a middle and a high school. Students can also attend three parochial schools and/or Minnesota State Community and Technical College.


Our Engineer Principal (Project Management) position will provide overall project management direction from inception to completion of projects. The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Primary project contact for other public agencies and the general public regarding project activities.
  • Provide overall direction and leadership to technical project teams in the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques in the management of project activities for minor to major scale projects to meet the project requirements.
  • Ensure consistency with MnDOT strategy, commitments and goals.
  • Ensure proper program execution and compliance with MnDOT, state and federal procedures, practices, regulations, and standards.

Here are the Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify for Engineer Principal, applicants must meet all the following:

  • Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)
  • Three (3) years of post-registration engineering experience at the Engineer Senior level (or equivalent) that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of all phases of program delivery including scoping, pre-design, final design and construction.
