EMS Systems Architect

Leander, TX

Rate Range: $120,000-$145,000; The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.


The EMS Systems Architect position is responsible for the maintenance and support of Energy Management Systems (EMS) and its ancillary systems and applications. Provides analysis and technical support to ensure continuing reliable operations of the Transmission Operations in compliance with NERC standards, ERCOT protocols and guidelines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs monthly GE Patching on EMS Linux servers and maintain the health of the servers.
  • Responsible for the integration of various EMS applications, monitoring, and regular maintenance.
  • Performs code build, patch implementation, and migrations in the EMS systems.
  • Develops and deploys situational awareness and system monitoring applications, and tools for operations and management.
  • Performs emergency recovery and troubleshooting of EMS system and applications.
  • Assists in developing tools, processes, and procedures that enhance system reliability and departmental/organizational efficiencies.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs the EMS systems, applications, and interfaces.
  • Perform Administrator tasks for ITOA (Outage Tool) and other internally developed supporting tools for EMS.
  • Monitor EMS, SCADA, and ICCP data and applications.
  • Build and maintains Aveva PI historian data base, Pi- Servers, Pi- DataLink and Pi vision.
  • Works on PI historian to build dashboards and create analytics to help view data for Operators and support groups.
  • Works with neighboring TO's and ERCOT for data exchange and emergency preparedness.
  • Understands and applies principles, theories, and concepts related to the NERC CIP Procedures and Polices.

  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned by the Manager.
  • Performs systems maintenance and improvement activities to support the effectiveness of the EMS, PI, ITOA and other tools.
  • Responds to system failures and operator questions on a 24/7 basis.
  • Maintain the security of confidential information

  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned

Supervisory and/or Leadership Responsibilities

May provide on the job training or help oversee the work of other engineers/analysts and drive the department KPI's.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience in systems/software architecture, design, development, and deployment.
  • Experience with programming languages such as VB, C, C , Java & Perl.
  • Experience with GE - Reliance XA21 or any EMS vendor suite of EMS Systems like E-terra, ABB, OSI or Siemens.
  • Experience with Data Historians such as OSIsoft/Aveva PI.
  • Experience in OS and Applications patching in Linux environment.
  • Experience with Oracle Databases and basic quires with PL/SQL.
  • Experience in Netapp Storage and Backup and recovery procedures.
  • Expert in technical architecture, support, and documentation skills.
  • Expert in analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Knowledge of technical presentations and reporting.
  • Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze, and resolve conflict and problems.
  • Experience in hardware and software evaluation principles, practices, and guidelines with ITIL process.

Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (Required)
  • 8+ years of work experience in Energy & Utility Sector with hands on system administration on Linux Operating systems and RDBMS (Oracle/SQL DB)
  • Preferred system administration experience in GE Reliance EMS Suite.
  • Driver's License
