Job Description

Summary

We are the public body responsible for England's historic environment. We promote understanding, appreciation, and care for historic places.

Historic England offers a fantastic opportunity as an Emerging Talent Trainee Placement - Project Research Officer.

This is a part-time, 28.5 hours/week, 8-week paid placement with West Midlands Heritage Trust. The role can be performed fully remotely or with one day a week in Worcester. It may lead to a 6-month Step Up Placement to further develop your skills.

Future Talent Programme

This programme provides paid opportunities for underrepresented groups in heritage, including ethnic minorities, disabled people, and those facing social or economic disadvantages. The placements last 8 weeks, with potential progression to a 6-month placement.

Purpose of the Placement

You will research the histories of at-risk historic buildings in the West Midlands, using online tools and archives to gather information such as location, usage, ownership, and significance. You will compile reports and assess the priority for future projects.

About West Midlands Heritage Trust

Established in 2025, the Trust manages historic buildings in the West Midlands region, acting as a not-for-profit developer to secure sustainable futures for listed buildings. It has completed numerous rescue projects.

Responsibilities

  • Research and document the stories of historic buildings
  • Gather photos and review planning records
  • Analyze social and economic data
  • Prepare reports and assessments for future project prioritization

Learning Outcomes

You will develop skills using the Skills Builder Universal Framework, including evaluating your skills, setting goals, and planning your development.

Events and Expectations

A Welcome Event will be held in London on 24 July 2025. You may also participate in promotional activities and case studies.
