At this company, you'll be expected to move fast, take ownership, and-most importantly-drive meaningful change. If that excites you, we're interested in hearing about your best work and accomplishments across any domain and from any point in your life.
About the Role As the first Embedded Software Engineer, you will architect, write, and implement embedded flight software for the company's initial vehicles. You'll invent new technologies while also leveraging time-tested aerospace components to rapidly build a reliable, ruthlessly simple, and low-cost system. Your work will enable communication with, control over, and updates to the vehicle during missions-carrying significant responsibility. As the company grows, your architecture will serve as the foundation for future vehicles produced at scale.
Responsibilities - Architect and implement the flight software for the company's first satellite, including selection and integration of operating systems, mission management software, command and data handling, and communication systems
- Write modular, introspectable, and reliable software that works the first time and is easy to validate
- Deliver fault-tolerant and remotely updatable systems robust to the LEO environment
- Collaborate with avionics engineers on processor and component selection and system architecture
- Develop or integrate software for components such as star sensors, ADCS, motors, batteries, thermal and comms systems, sail deployment mechanisms, and cameras
- Support satellite subsystem testing through well-structured embedded systems
- Implement comprehensive testing, including unit tests, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop setups
- Establish best practices for software development, version control, release, and validation
Ideal Qualifications - Proficient in C and/or C for embedded systems, ideally within autonomous systems like spacecraft, drones, or robotics
- Strong background in designing high-reliability software systems, with emphasis on fault tolerance, validation, and remote operations
- Experience architecting electromechanical systems independently or alongside avionics teams
- Hands-on experience with deployed systems and the ability to iterate based on real-world performance
- Comfortable with autonomy and fast decision-making, knowing when to move quickly and when to deliberate
- Open-minded to new solutions and eager to challenge legacy aerospace conventions to unlock massive scale at a fraction of the traditional cost and time
Even if you don't meet every qualification listed, the team is interested in hearing from exceptional candidates with unusual or unconventional backgrounds. Building a great team is the highest priority.
Benefits The company's success depends on its people, and the compensation and benefits are designed to reflect that:
- Full coverage of base medical, dental, and vision insurance
- Access to HSA, FSA, 401(k), and commuter benefits
- Unlimited PTO, with a mandatory minimum of two weeks per year
- Healthy lunches provided daily
