Your new role
As part of the Works Department, you will be responsible for both reactive repairs and planned and preventative maintenance. HMP Swansea prides themselves on engaging and involving employees working alongside them in the process of change. The Maintenance role is in a unique working environment with a strong sense of team working. Always in demand, you could benefit from long-term contracts and there is also potential, once trained, to work in other prisons both locally and nationally. You must be local to the prison or have your own transport.
The job involves:

  • Reactive repairs & rewires along with small, planned projects and maintenance.
  • Deal effectively and safely with breakdowns and fault-finding
  • Be involved in survey inspections for quality control including confined spaces etc
  • All work needs to be recorded and logged.
  • Equipment and services on site where necessary
  • Required to carry out various inspections within the works department, including repairs to various assets, building fabric throughout the prison estate, e.g. furniture, internal/external fixtures and fittings, grounds, access and car parking, etc.
  • Team working with various skill levels
  • Security awareness within the prison environment
  • Promoting a positive health and safety culture across the site, leading by example, including reporting any incidents or near-misses in a timely and effective manner, ensuring all H+S procedures are followed.
  • To undertake and assist with other maintenance as required by the Estates Manager.
  • To undertake a planned programme of maintenance as directed by the Estates Manager.

  • These duties will require you to work on the wings and corridors of the prison site. Therefore, the ideal candidate would need to be security-conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks; you will also need to be reliable and consistent, level-headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Full training on working within a prison is provided by the establishment/ department.

    What you'll need to succeed
    The ideal candidate must hold their 18th Edition and NVQ Level Electrical Qualifications and Test and Inspection qualifications. Time-served applicants or lower-level editions will not be considered.
