This is an exciting opportunity in the Digital and Technology directorate for an enthusiastic Lead engineer with excellent leadership and technical skills who can support and develop Companies House systems. You will be customer and service focused with particular attention on service availability, problem solving, and root cause analysis.

You will have a track record of coaching and mentoring other IT professionals and be able to network and engage with stakeholders to deliver improvements. You will ensure that value is delivered through improvement and automation of Companies House's systems, including infrastructure, tooling, upgrade paths, configuration, performance monitoring, alerting, and tuning.

Job description


We are proud to have hit our availability target of 99.5% over the last 5 years, and you will be working in a team that will assist us in continuing to meet this target across our new and current systems. The team carries out maintenance, upgrades, automation, and service improvements to provide a high-capacity, secure, and resilient IT service capable of exceeding performance targets. The estate has recently migrated to the AWS cloud, and we are in the midst of a significant transformation project to align our services with our new powers under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill.


We are looking for individuals with proven DevOps automation and monitoring skills who are willing to learn new technologies and develop their careers by working on large and small projects alongside developers, analysts, and testers, delivering agile change to our existing and new services. You will be part of the IT Services Digital team during a time of great change and play an integral role in shaping the future development of Companies House systems. Responsibilities include release management, maintenance, upgrades, automation, service improvements, resolving ServiceNow incident issues, and root cause analysis. You will contribute to projects aimed at enhancing the range and quality of digital services available to customers and actively participate in the transformation of our services and smarter ways of working.


You will also participate in the on-call rota for your section, in line with the current on-call agreement, to ensure our services remain operational at all times. This on-call element covers 24/7/365 and is an essential requirement of the role.

Person specification


We are looking for the following experience, which will be assessed during the application process:


  • Incident/problem resolution and root cause analysis.
  • Problem resolution via coding and scripting.
  • Ad hoc reporting and data management.
  • Proven experience within an IT environment (preferably in an operations environment) and of leading a technical team.
  • System software build and release, including automation of manual processes, code deployment, and environment provisioning.
  • Setting up performance monitoring, alerting, and tuning for web-based services and APIs.
  • Coaching and supporting colleagues in non-functional requirements, ensuring availability, security, capacity, and performance of services.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement activities collaboratively within and outside the team.
  • Excellent customer focus, communication, and networking skills.
  • Mentoring and leading less experienced team members.

Technical Experience (Please refer to these in your personal statement):


  • Demonstrable experience with Unix/Linux in support or development environments.
  • Experience with DevOps and related technologies.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Delivery methods and Agile Scrum practices.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure in the cloud.
  • Experience with database querying.
  • Experience with technologies such as AWS, Java, Terraform, Concourse, Ansible, Docker, JSON, SQL, GIT, Tibco iProcess, Doc1.

Experience with similar technologies will be considered.
