This full-time, permanent position in the Drug Chemistry Section works under direction of an Assistant Laboratory Director. The person in the position will be expected to work collaboratively with laboratory management to effectively manage personnel and the direction of all laboratory activities. These activities will be conducted in adherence to the agency policies and procedures in a manner that embodies the mission, vision, and values of the MN BCA. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: -Overseeing the operations and promoting efficiencies of the Drug Chemistry Section. -Incorporating process improvements and ensuring that work meets time and quality objectives. -Ensuring proper preservation and documentation of evidence and adherence to the quality management system of the laboratory and applicable laws, protocols, and regulations. -Supervising Forensic Scientists and other assigned personnel. -Acquiring an in-depth knowledge of Department, BCA, and Section policies and procedures and Department policies on leave, disciplinary action, and employee recognition. -Having comprehensive knowledge of the scientific principles and theory behind all examinations performed. -Having knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 and ANAB Forensic Science Accreditation and the ability to relate them to such things as hiring practices, laboratory set-up, and procedures. -Having a basic understanding of the Forensic Science Service's budget and State purchasing rules and procedures. -Performing technical reviews of reports, if qualified, and administrative reviews of all types of laboratory activity and examinations performed within the Drug Chemistry Section. -Working as a liaison between laboratory sections, clients and laboratory personnel to determine the order and magnitude of examinations required in any given case. -Having the ability to accurately assess the work performance of personnel and effectively communicate and implement methods in which to improve performance if necessary. -Having the ability to effectively communicate the goals and objectives of BCA management to laboratory personnel. Minimum Qualifications 1. Bachelor of Science degree in a physical or life science, such as Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or Physics, Forensic Science or equivalent from an accredited university. 2. Current BCA Forensic Scientist 3 OR a Current BCA Forensic Scientist 2 with at least five (5) years of experience at the BCA Forensic Science Laboratory OR a current BCA Forensic Science Supervisor OR candidate has a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a supervisory/management position in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic laboratory. 3. Testified in a court of law as an expert witness in Forensic analyses. 4. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 5. Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications 1. Demonstrated leadership skills. 2. Demonstrated knowledge and use of laboratory quality assurance procedures. 3. Demonstrated human relations skills dealing with coworkers, clients, management, and public. 4. Excellent standard computer software, word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills. 5. Masters or PhD degree in a related scientific or management discipline. 6. Certification by a relevant forensic science certification bodies. Physical Requirements Requires occasionally moving and transporting 50-pound items and frequently moving and transporting objects such as heavy tools and heavy file boxes. This job may require positioning of self to move to a significant degree across rough terrain or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
