The Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine (SOM) is currently seeking a qualified candidate at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Surgery to serve in the role of Division Chief for Urologic Surgery. Reporting to the Chair of Surgery, the incoming Chief will be responsible for partnering with the Chair to develop clinical programs and expand research while focusing on academic success in a collaborative environment. The Division Chief will oversee clinical service, patient care, research and scholarship, education and mentorship. The growth and development of faculty within the division is a priority for the department and offers tremendous opportunity for the new division chief. The incumbent will have a proven record of accomplishment in leadership, clinical excellence, patient care, education, and mentorship in order to develop the Division in all of its mission areas.

The UNM Division of Urology currently consists of fellowship-trained and specialized urologists within the fields of oncology, pediatrics, GU soft tissue reconstruction, robotics, reconstructive urology and renal transplantation. Surgeons within the division provide full urologic care to a variety of benign and malignant conditions. This position would work closely with the residency program. The UNM Division of Urology and Department of Surgery boast a robust infrastructure of services and resources to help achieve academic goals, and leadership opportunities are available.

UNM serves a large, medically complex population and is a consultative resource for the State of New Mexico and the Four Corners region of the Southwest United States. Outpatient surgical services are provided through the UNM Hospital, UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, and the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)- designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The UNM Health Science Center (HSC) is the largest academic health complex in the state of New Mexico and is the only Level 1 trauma center. It is the state s only site for urologic residency training. Located on the University of New Mexico campus in beautiful Albuquerque, NM, the HSC combines its four mission areas - education, research, patient care and community outreach - to provide New Mexicans with the highest level of health care.

Minimum Qualifications for Position:

  • Medical Doctor or equivalent
  • Board-certified/board-eligible In Urology through the American Board of Urology
  • Eligible for medical licensure in New Mexico
  • Eligible for State of New Mexico Board of Pharmacy certification
  • Eligible for a federal DEA registration
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications for Position:

  • Completion of an ACGME Urology Residency
  • Experience with professional education, teaching, and research
  • Evidence of leadership roles in academic medicine
  • Experience mentoring of junior faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to create and articulate a shared vision and engage others in its implementation
  • Interest and proficiency in management of complex general urologic disease including newer treatments
  • Interest and proficiency in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
