Director, Writing Center and Associate College Lecturer

Job Summary:
Cleveland State University invites applications for a new Director of the Writing Center, beginning July 1, 2025. The Director of the Writing Center will be hired at the rank of Associate College Lecturer. The Director is expected to devote 60% of their time to administrative responsibilities and 40% to teaching and teaching-related activities. This is a 12-month administrative faculty position, renewable annually, and is not covered by the collective bargaining agreement with the AAUP-CSU.
Description of Job Duties:
Develop, plan and implement comprehensive Writing Center tutoring and academic support services, programs, and workshops to enhance the academic performance and retention of students, including:
- Develop curriculum and materials for Writing Center I and II, which support students taking College Writing (ENG 100, 101, and 102).
- Maintain a comprehensive writing tutoring program, including content for students enrolled in College Writing courses and Writing Center I and II, and offering both remote and in-person appointment options. Tutoring services should effectively address diverse student writing needs and inclusively serve non-native English speakers.
- Develop workshops and activities for faculty and students and collaborate to tailor materials for particular classes or writing needs, online coursework, and Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC).
- Maintain a writing materials repository, including current physical and digital resources that suit the needs of first-year through advanced and graduate student writers.
- Provide training and supervision for graduate and teaching assistants assigned to the Writing Center, covering composition pedagogy, tutoring principles, and best practices.
- Conduct assessment on Writing Center-related programs, including measures of student and faculty satisfaction.

The Writing Center offers in-person and remote tutoring services to CSU students, faculty, and staff. The Writing Center is integral to CSU's First-Year Writing and Writing Across the Curriculum programs and works closely with its Academic Support Hub. The Director is responsible for the Center's daily operations, trains and oversees its workforce of student tutors, teaches courses in composition/rhetoric, collaborates on grant support of the Center, and develops materials and programming to serve the Center's mission and support the university's curricular needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in composition/rhetoric, English, or a related field;
- 5+ years of experience teaching composition, rhetoric, and/or writing courses at the college level;
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in college writing and Writing Center pedagogy;
- Familiarity with technology relevant to college writing pedagogy, including generative AI;
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with the Director of the First-Year Writing, as well as faculty, staff, and students across the university;
- Previous supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal degree in composition/rhetoric, English, or a related field;
- 1+ years of leadership experience at a Writing Center or Learning Center;
- Demonstrated effectiveness in administrative, organizational, and/or academic service tasks;
- Record of publication in related fields.
