Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The TRIO Program at UNCG supports the academic success, retention, and graduation of low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities through comprehensive, student-centered services. TRIO aims to foster academic achievement and personal growth by providing tailored advising, academic support, financial literacy education, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and graduate school preparation. By addressing both academic and non-academic barriers, TRIO empowers students to reach their fullest potential, successfully complete their degrees, and pursue further education, ultimately enhancing their social mobility and lifelong success.

Position Summary:

The Director of TRiO Programs is responsible for leading and managing TRIO Programs, including but not limited to SSS Classic, SSS STEM-H, and McNair Scholars, aimed at supporting low-income, first-generation, and disabled students. The Director ensures program compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and grant guidelines, focusing on increasing student retention and graduation rates.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The Director must have a Master's degree in Education, Counseling, or related field with at least 5 years of administrative experience including budget management, staff supervision, planning evaluation and reporting in an organization comparable to TRIO Programs.
  • The Director must also have 5 years' experience in direct services (counseling, teaching, advising, etc) to TRIO-eligible students.

Program Oversight and Leadership

Essential Tasks:

  • Provide visionary leadership and effective management for TRIO Programs, ensuring adherence to federal grant guidelines, UNCG's strategic objectives, and institutional policies.
  • Act as the primary representative for all TRIO-related initiatives, building strong connections within the university and with external partners and communities.
  • Engage actively and collaborate with campus departments and the Division of Student Success to align TRIO services with broader institutional priorities, including a steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Develop and lead strategic initiatives to expand and enhance program offerings, increase visibility, and create a lasting positive impact, while advocating for policies and systemic changes that support and empower TRIO-eligible students.
  • Participates in professional development activities (COE, SAEOPP, NC TRIO, etc.)

Administrative & Financial Management:

Essential Tasks:

  • Provide comprehensive oversight and strategic management of all TRIO Program budgets, including federal, state, and discretionary funds, ensuring strict compliance with grant regulations and university policies.
  • Develop, administer, and monitor annual budgets, conducting regular reviews and monthly reconciliations to ensure accurate fiscal tracking and optimal resource allocation.
  • Prepare and submit detailed annual reports and fiscal progress reports to the U.S. Department of Education and relevant university stakeholders, documenting program outcomes, budget performance, and overall impact.
  • Maintain meticulous records and track all funding expenditures to guarantee adherence to regulations, allowable costs, and best financial practices.

Staff Supervision & Professional Development:

Essential Tasks:

  • Oversee and guide the implementation of both formative and summative evaluation procedures for TRIO Programs, ensuring comprehensive data collection and analysis for university reporting and for the mandatory Annual Performance Report submitted to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Lead efforts to recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate program staff, creating and maintaining a supportive, inclusive work environment that empowers staff to excel.
  • Champion professional development opportunities that align with TRIO goals and UNCG standards, fostering staff growth, enhancing program effectiveness, and advancing student success.

Student Support & Program Services

Essential Tasks:

  • Evaluate and assess student records to determine eligibility, services provided, and program outcomes in strict accordance with federal and state guidelines.
  • Design and implement comprehensive, student-centered services tailored to the needs of TRIO-eligible students, including academic advising, mentoring, targeted workshops, and a range of support initiatives that address academic, personal, and professional development goals.
  • Foster strong collaborations with university offices, faculty, and staff to ensure holistic support and advocacy for TRIO students, enhancing their success through integrated campus-wide resources and services.

  • Lead the collection, analysis, and comprehensive reporting of data related to program activities, student outcomes, and compliance measures, ensuring adherence to all federal, state, and institutional guidelines.
  • Utilize evidence-based methods to evaluate program effectiveness, identify areas for enhancement, and implement targeted improvements that maximize student success and align with best practices.
