Job Summary/Description:

Develop overall sports medicine program for intercollegiate athletics, including injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes.

Typical Duties/Job Duties:

  1. Provide athletic training services (preventative, diagnostic, and rehabilitative) for the athletic department, including attendance at scheduled team and individual practices and home and away competitions as necessary. Coordinate and conduct all student athlete welfare initiatives, i.e. sickle cell testing, concussion management screening and testing, and athletic nutritional programs, personal health and safety awareness programs, etc.
  2. Coordinate with our partners and local entities (Shannon, ASU PT, WTRC, Drug Free Sport etc.) to provide maximum possible opportunities for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitative services for Angelo State Athletic Department including pre-season physical examinations, medical referrals, post surgical physical therapy and general medicine issues for student-athletes related to practice and/or competition; also developing and implementing an effective drug education and testing program.
  3. Keep accurate records and documentation regarding all injury assessments, evaluations (pre and post season), medical referrals, insurance information, rehabilitation, and treatment; communicating effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and parents of student-athletes, regarding all of the following: injuries, availability for practice and / or competition, surgery and/or options, payment, services provided, and coordination of insurance payments when necessary.
  4. Evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment that will enhance the benefit of the sports medicine program and services, along with developing and implementing strategies and initiatives to keep the sports medicine program on the "cutting edge" to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of student-athletes.
  5. Assist athletic director and athletic business manager in the development of sports medicine program budget that allows for scheduling athletic training staff, students, and contract staff for coverage of all team practices and competitions when necessary. Including keeping accurate documentation regarding all injury assessments, evaluations, medical referrals, insurance information, rehabilitation, and treatments all within compliance to NCAA, LSC, ASU and TTUS policies, rules and regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports programs.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Knowledge of medical care, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others.
  • Ability to perform the duties of a licensed / certified athletic trainer.
  • Skilled in both oral and written communication.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, or a directly related field is required; a master's degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, or directly related field is preferred.
  • A license from the Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers is required, with certification by the NATA Board of Certification is preferred. Three years of intercollegiate athletic training experience or equivalent is preferred.
