As our Director of Development, you will lead Volta's membership sales and business development efforts. Your primary focus will be growing and sustaining our member base - building relationships with executives across the battery and energy storage industry, communicating the value of membership, and closing new business. You will play a key role in building partnerships with companies and individuals who want to engage more deeply with the Volta community, aligning our offerings with their strategic priorities and positioning Volta as the industry's central platform for professional collaboration.
This is a sales-driven, externally facing role ideal for someone energized by building relationships, closing deals, and helping mission-driven organizations grow. It offers a high level of visibility in the industry and a chance to contribute meaningfully to the growth and direction of a dynamic trade association.
The Role
The ideal candidate is a motivated and personable business development professional with strong sales instincts and a deep appreciation for ecosystem-building. You should be energized by outreach, skilled in consultative selling, and excited to engage with leaders across industry, finance, academia, and policy. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, you will play a critical role in achieving revenue goals and expanding Volta's reach and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Membership Sales & Growth
- Own the full membership sales funnel-from prospecting to outreach, pitch, proposal, and close
- Develop and manage a pipeline of prospective member organizations across all segments of the battery ecosystem (startups, corporates, suppliers, investors, research institutions, and government agencies)
- Build and maintain relationships with key decision-makers (C-suite, strategy, business development, partnerships).
- Partner with the Executive Director to refine Volta's membership offerings and outreach strategies in response to member feedback
Business Development Strategy
- Identify new verticals and strategic opportunities for member recruitment
- Create scalable outreach campaigns and business development materials (pitch decks, emails, collateral) that align with Volta's voice and mission in partnership with the Marketing team
- Maintain accurate records of outreach and performance in Hubspot; track and report on sales metrics and performance to Volta's leadership and board of directors
Relationship Management & Stewardship
- Serve as a key point of contact for prospective new members, ensuring a smooth onboarding experience and high-value engagement from day one
- Collaborate with the Member Success team to ensure new members are set up for long-term partnerships and renewal
- Attend industry events, conferences, and convenings to network, recruit, and represent Volta in the broader ecosystem
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in sales, business development, or partnerships - ideally in a B2B, nonprofit, or trade association setting
- Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding sales goals
- Strong relationship-building skills with senior decision-makers across technical and commercial roles.
- Experience in the battery, cleantech, energy, or advanced manufacturing sectors is preferred.
- Self-starter who thrives in an entrepreneurial, high-trust, remote-first environment.

- This role involves regular travel for major industry events and member-facing engagements. Travel expectations are flexible and can be tailored based on your location, experience, and Volta's strategic needs.
Compensation
We offer a competitive compensation package designed to reward both experience and performance.
- $150,000 $225,000 USD OTC per year
- Base Salary: $100,000 USD annually
- Performance Bonus: Performance-based incentives tied to new membership revenue and business development success
