Summary of Position: The primary responsibilities of the Director of Mechanical Systems are: to provide leadership for the Mechanical Systems Department within Facility Services. In addition this role would manage and direct daily operations within the HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical divisions. Exercise management responsibility for 15 full time employees and a pool of student workers in support of over 2 million sq. ft. of building. Provide sound stewardship practices over the Mechanical Systems operational budget/assets. Serves as Coordinator/Liaison to external/internal constituents in areas relating to services rendered within the mechanical systems department. Provide management responsibilities and insight for internal projects, capital projects, and capital construction.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of annual budget specifically related to Mechanical Systems functions
    • Areas specific to the Mechanical Systems department budget include HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical equipment, pool care, fire safety, elevators, energy management, equipment purchases, and equipment repair
    • Develop a productive Christ centered team of fulltime, part time, and student workers that are committed to serving the campus community by mentoring employees and develop team skills; foster a learning culture and maintain effective training, certification, and licensure programs
    • Assist in the development of a Campus Capital Action Plan specifically related to the Universities building systems by identifying future maintenance items with potential budgetary impact of those items
  • Develop and implement an IWU Maintenance "On Call" program that best utilizes the universities labor force, equipment, and material/financial assets
    • Proactively support the University's commitment to environmental sustainability and investigate and employ appropriate renewable energy solutions specifically related to electrical consumptions, fuel consumptions, and by the implementation of "best practices" within the Energy Management division of the Mechanical Systems department
    • Assist in the implementation of university policies and procedures by providing guidance, training, and oversight to fellow team members
  • Consult with building architects, engineers, and university departments in the planning and development of Renovation/Improvement/Capital projects directed by the Assistant Vice President of Operations and Facilities
    • Monitor construction work and other contracted related projects to ensure that the construction is done in accordance with specifications and satisfaction of the university
    • Delegate to and hold direct reports responsible for satisfactory performance of assignments
    • Prepare and maintain operational plans and measure and report performance against the plans. Supervise 15 full time employees and a pool of student workers
    • Provide leadership/oversight in the procurement of materials, supplies, equipment, and services related to the assigned spaces
    • Represent IWU as assigned to internal/external committees, boards, and agencies in areas related to functions and assignments
    • Receive and carry out special assignments as directed by the Assistant Vice President of Operations and Facilities
  • Be available 24/7 by cell phone for emergency situations
    • Serve as coordinator/liaison for the following inspections and daily operations: Indiana Department of Homeland Security/State Boiler Division Indiana Department of Homeland Security /State elevator division Indiana Wesleyan University/Insurance carrier inspections Marion Fire Department/Safety inspections Marion Indiana Water Department/Backflow inspections

Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.

Education

  • Associates degree required, Bachelor's degree preferred in an engineering or management field

Experience

  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in building systems, five (5) of which must have included the supervision and management of operational personnel and operational budget expenditures

Required Skills

  • Highly attentive to details, a self-starter, and ability to work without close supervision
  • Creative and innovative; gifted in problem solving; talented planner and organizer
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; discerning and tactful
  • Must have a valid driver's license
