The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program seeks to increase the number of students who transfer to 4-year colleges or universities in pursuit of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degrees. The Program serves students who are at a disadvantage educationally or economically and encourages participation from student populations currently and historically underrepresented in STEM, including, but not limited to, women and, minoritized racial and ethnic groups. Twelve community colleges in Washington currently operate MESA Programs with coordination and oversight from WA MESA.
The Program Director will be responsible for day-to-day management of and strategic planning for the MESA Community College Program at Olympic CollegeEssential Functions
Develop partnerships on campus with faculty, clubs and programs in an effort to recruit students into the MESA program. Serve as a resource for MESA students both directly and by referring them to appropriate resources for tutoring, financial aid, advising, counseling and other institutional and community services.Coordinate, plan, and oversee recruitment/outreach activities, MESA orientation activities, on and off-campus events for MESA students, including campus visits, scientific conferences, networking and industry events, transfer fairs, scholarship fairs, workshops, award ceremonies, and graduation celebrations. Accompany and/or arrange travel for students to off-campus events, often on the weekend or occasionally weeknights. Some, though infrequent, overnight travel may be required. Oversee the MESA student center and ensure that a welcoming atmosphere is maintained for academic and social purposes to meet the needs of MESA students and facilitate cohort formation.Monitor MESA student grades, course taking patterns and degree completion progress, contact and guide students as needed in conjunction with other sources of advising on campus. Provide mentorship, coaching and support for MESA students, help develop personal and professional goals and strategies for academic and transfer success. Manage MESA program budgets under the supervision of the Dean for Mathematics, Engineering, Science, and Health. Pursue additional funding sources such as OC SGOC funding and grant opportunities as available. Track and provide data for student participation, progress, persistence, completion, and transfer; analyze, summarize and reference data in reports in a clear and engaging manner.Seek and maintain relationships in local industry and the community to identify individuals to act as mentors, guest speakers and to build capacity for job shadowing and other relevant career-connected experiences for students.Attend and actively participate in statewide MESA Directors' meetings and other activities, ensure successful implementation of the major pillars of the MESA Community College program in accordance with WA MESA statewide guidelines.Integrate knowledge, awareness and skills that reflect multicultural, diversity, equity and inclusion competencies in order to effectively support students from a broad array of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and realities. Oversee Program Assistant duties; identify staffing needs and hire additional professional and/or student employees as needed; train staff and delegate appropriate duties. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.Experience in planning, organizing, and delivering academic support services and events.Experience in project management and/or program coordination or management.Experience working with college students at a post-secondary institution.Strong writing and communication skills, with the ability to speak in public with large or small groups of students, community members, industry professionals, faculty and colleagues.Preferred QualificationsDegree and/or work experience in a STEM discipline or with STEM transfer planning and/or STEM success strategies.Experience in managing and leading delivery of student support services.Experience in creating new initiatives to support, recruit and/or facilitate success of college students.Familiarity with organizational, operational, and structural functions of community colleges.Demonstrated institutional experience working in a multicultural environment with undergraduate students who are underrepresented in STEM field programs.Experience engaging and working with different educational, social, non-profit, government, etc. entities that represent broad cultural and socioeconomic communities.High level of personal responsibility, comfortable taking initiative in carrying out tasks and assignments; able to multi-task and perform under pressure with minimal supervision while maintaining focus on many short and long-term projects.Ability to exercise adaptive and flexible problem solving skills in identifying areas of improvement, making appropriate changes and monitoring the outcome.Successful applicants will be able toWork collaboratively and respectfully with individuals and groups representing a wide range of diverse cultural, geographic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.Work independently, assume responsibility, and take initiative in carrying out assignments.Multitask and perform effectively under pressure, with frequent interruptions, primarily from students.Comply with campus regulations, local ordinances, and State and Federal laws.Additional Information
