About the Opportunity:Reporting to the Office of Global Engagement,
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides visa and immigration-related support services to international students, visiting and exchange international students, and international faculty and scholars, and the academic departments/research units that enroll, invite and/or employ them through visa sponsorship. Currently, ISSS supports more than 2,400 international students and visiting exchange international students, 650 international scholars and faculty, and 550 international alumni on OPT and OPT-STEM Extension .
Responsibilities:Reporting to the Associate Provost for Global Engagement, we seek a Director to provide strategic direction, operational oversight, and managerial supervision of the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) team.
Under the direction of the Associate Provost for Global Engagement, the Director works closely with the highest levels of campus leadership to support the global vision for the University and, through collaborative partnership, help advance Brown's academic, research and operational strategic priorities. Working in an open and engaged manner with faculty and academic and administrative campus partners, the Director promotes best practices that support inclusive and accessible student- and scholar-centered support services.
Each year, the Director is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and effectively responding to feedback to ensure continuous improvement and operational excellence in international student and scholar services. The Director serves as a member of the Global Brown Executive Committee and the Global Brown Student Support Team. The Director also serves as the University's primary liaison with the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of State and other government agencies pertaining to immigration matters.
Major Responsibilities:- Oversees and furthers a dynamic, inclusive, and intercultural environment that supports international students, visiting and exchange international students, and international faculty and scholars, and the academic departments/research units that enroll, invite and/or employ them through visa sponsorship.
- Cultivates contacts and relationships with relevant external agencies, professional associations and vendors that can serve as valuable resources in achieving OGE and the University's academic and research mission and goals.
- Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of appropriate resources, programs, and services that support international students, scholars and faculty at Brown.
- Works with and leads a team who advise and support international undergraduate, Master's and PhD students, visiting students, scholars and faculty to obtain and maintain legal nonimmigrant status in the United States, and to access relevant non-immigration benefits.
- Develops operational procedures for institutional compliance with immigration laws and regulations, including SEVIS compliance and re-certifications.
- Facilitates the implementation and integration of immigration-related guidelines and policies into university academic and operational plans.
- Serves as an expert resource on current and emerging immigration laws and regulations that may affect the institution and international student and scholar communities.
- Provides relevant and timely guidance and communications on immigration-related issues that may impact international students and scholars to academic and administrative units.
- Advocates for international students and scholars; and liaises with faculty, staff, government agencies, and professional associations on the various issues impacting international students and scholars.
- Works closely with colleagues in the Office of Global Engagement to ensure Brown's steadfast commitment to international students and scholars as articulated by university leadership, the university strategic plan, and Global Brown Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).
Qualifications:- At least eight years of experience working with international students and scholars and/or serving as an advisor at a college/university or similar institutional setting.
- At least three years of direct supervision of employees.
- A minimum of five years of experience serving as a DSO (designated school official).
- Master's degree in a relevant field, such as international education, higher education administration, counseling & student services, intercultural communication, international affairs, international relations or a related field is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and execute a comprehensive set of strategic goals, initiatives, and programming; exceptionally strong skills in negotiation and consensus-building; agility and nimbleness as a decision-maker; and commitment to understanding best practices in the field.
- Knowledge of immigration laws and regulations, a commitment to international education and intercultural learning, and an understanding of government and other networks affecting the field
- Knowledge and experience with specialized immigration management software database systems (e.g. TerraDotta, Sunapsis, Ellucians), including government databases (e.g. Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS
- Strong organizational skills, an ability to work without direct supervision, outstanding written and oral communication skills, discretion, sound judgment, collaboration, empathy and team-building skills are essential.
- Commitment to furthering university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while supporting international students and scholars is required.
- Ability to serve as a PDSO (Principal Designated School Official) and Responsible Officer (RO) based on federal eligibility requirements
- Capacity to work effectively with faculty of many disciplines, with a diverse student population, and with other University stakeholders to advance OGE's and Brown's missions and the goals outlined in the University Strategic Plan and University Diversity and Inclusion Action Plans as well as any future strategic universitywide goals.
