Job Description: Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President of Financial Affairs, the Director of Financial Aid is responsible for the Financial Aid Office and administers all institutional financial aid and loan programs. Monitors budgets, provides financial aid related advisement, and establishes procedures and policies in compliance with institutional guidelines and Hillsdale College's mission.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Manages and supervises all financial aid processes for awarding student loans, grants, and scholarship packages; Administers, controls, and coordinates institutional financial aid funds from numerous individual programs.
  2. Advises students, parents, staff, and off-campus agencies on all aspects of student financial aid. Counsels students and parents concerning financial aid eligibility. Uses professional judgment based on individual circumstances and funding.
  3. Supervises, trains, and evaluates departmental staff; works with staff to assign responsibilities; determines departmental priorities and procedures; and ensures cross-training occurs.
  4. Maintain a working knowledge of the College's software systems and collaborate across departments for effective and accurate service to students.
  5. Contribute to student satisfaction through the delivery of quality customer service in all aspects of the administration of student financial aid.
  6. Completes financial aid-related reports for both institutional and external purposes.
  7. Ensures compliance with the NCAA bylaws, proper reporting, and maintenance within the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System ( SEVIS ) and with other outside affiliates.
  8. Coordinate the activities of the Financial Office with the Admissions Office to recruit new students.
  9. Assist the Institutional Advancement Office with donor activities, proposals, and reporting.
  10. Interpret, administer, and enforce work rules, rules of conduct, College policies and procedures, and performance standards among assigned employees.
  11. Evaluate and keep records of employees' attendance, performance, and progress with regard to behavior, incident reports, work habits, skills, and observations.
  12. Maintains confidentiality of information exposed during business regarding students, supervisors, and other employees.
  13. Maintains open and effective communication among all supervised areas through staff meetings, ad hoc meetings, email, and one-on-one meetings with employees.
  14. The administrator needs to test for Hillsdale Academy Scholarship assessment and work with the headmaster on Academy Scholarship awards.


Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in student personnel, business, or related area and at least three years of increased administrative responsibilities for a college or university financial aid program.

  5. Experience with financial need analysis, counseling, and packaging financial aid.
  6. Possess strong leadership, problem-solving, organizational, management, and public speaking skills.
