We are helping a prestigious independent school in the Bay Area hire a Director of Finance. This high visibility role will lead the accounting function and staff including accounting operations, financial close, audit coordination, and budgeting. This is an excellent opportunity to work for a mission-based organization where you can make an impact. Additionally, the Director of Finance will partner with the CFOO to modernize accounting/ finance operations, improve and automate processes, and support other strategic initiatives including capital outlay and long-range planning. Target compensation is $140k-$175k with excellent benefits.



Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead all accounting operations including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Purchasing, Accounts Receivable, Tuition Billing and Collection, and Contributions.
  • Lead, supervise, and support the Business Office Team, including professional development, goals, and performance reviews.
  • Run point on external audit and internal controls including the annual financial audit, annual pension plan audit, annual workers compensation audit, and other audits as needed.
  • Prepare timely and detailed reports on financial performance on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Monitor the annual operating budget, identify and analyze variances, and develop appropriate solutions and/or recommendations.
  • Ensure adherence to financial policies, laws, and governmental compliance requirements for 501c3 organizations.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely filing of all required reporting, including annual 990 tax return, property tax returns, and sales tax returns.
  • Work with the CFOO to develop accounting and management policies and procedures to ensure adequate financial controls, audit trails, and the safeguarding of institutional assets.
  • Assist the CFOO as needed in budget management and reporting.
  • Attend board committee meetings as requested by the CFOO.


Guidelines for Consideration Include:

  • CPA or advanced degree preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years of Controllership/ leading accounting operations and staff
  • Experience relating to non-profit and or educational institutions is preferred
  • System savvy with experience driving process improvements and automations across the finance/ accounting organization is desired
