Who We Want
We are currently seeking a Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of EHS programs across all manufacturing facilities in Fenton, Michigan. This role ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, implementing best practices while promoting a proactive safety, health and environmental culture that supports operational excellence, sustainability, and employee well-being.
What You Will Be Doing
- Lead EH&S Strategy: Develop and implement comprehensive EH&S strategies, policies and procedures that align with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure full compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and local environmental and safety regulations. Develop and implement programs and processes to monitor and measure compliance across all business units and facilities. Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies.
- Incident Management: Establish protocols for incident reporting, investigation, and corrective action. Oversee incident response, investigation to identify root cause analysis, develop solutions, and prevent recurrence. Ensure corrective actions are tracked and implemented, and the timely and accurate reporting to regulatory agencies as required
- Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Conduct site assessments of potential environmental, health and safety hazards across the organization. Develop and implement effective risk management strategies, including safety protocols, emergency response plans, and training programs. Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs) to identify risks and recommend control measures.
- Training & Education: Develop and deliver EH&S training programs for all employees at all levels on policies, procedures, and best practices including on-boarding, annual compliance and specialized topics. Ensure that employees understand their responsibilities and promote a culture of safety and environmental consciousness.
- Metrics & Reporting: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor EHS performance throughout the organization (such as TRIR, near misses, audit scores, etc.). Analyze data, identify trends, and provide regular reports to senior management. Use data driven insight to drive continuous improvement.
- Audits and Assessments: Develop and implement corporate-wide EHS audit programs to assess compliance, identify gaps, and drive corrective actions. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure thorough and effective audits.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including senior executives, business unit leaders, and EHS teams, to foster a culture of EHS excellence. Provide guidance, support, and expert advice on EHS matters. Engage with external stakeholders, such as regulatory agencies and industry groups, to stay informed of best practices and emerging trends.
- Environmental Stewardship: Manage hazardous waste programs, air emissions reporting, spill prevention, and sustainability initiatives. Drive sustainability initiatives to minimize the organization's environmental impact. Identify opportunities to reduce waste, conserve resources, and promote environmentally friendly practices.
- Team Leadership: This role is responsible for providing leadership to the EHS team to ensure consistent management of our employee policies and practices across the organization. This includes improving the performance of the team through coaching, providing development opportunities, and implementing new tools to improve the organization's overall health and safety of all employees.
- Budgeting: Develop and manage the EHS budget. Manage and support 3-4 local site EH&S team members, ensuring efficient allocation of resources. Identify and leverage cost-saving opportunities while maintaining a high standard of EHS performance.
- Emergency Preparedness: Maintain and update emergency response plans and coordinate regular drills.

What Requirements Are Needed
Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred) and 8+ years of EH&S experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in a multi-site environment with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, and other relevant standards.
- Strong experience with safety systems, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and environmental compliance in a factory or plant setting.
- Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH, CHMM, or similar are preferred.
- Proven track record of leading safety initiatives and reducing incidents in a production-driven environment.
- Proven track record of implementing a successful EHS program.
- Excellent understanding of safety and environmental risk assessment and mitigation techniques.
- Experience in incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver EHS training programs.
- Previous experience leading a team that is dispersed geographically.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
