We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Engineering to lead our engineering team and drive innovation across client and internal projects. This role is integral to our organization's success, requiring a visionary leader who can align engineering initiatives with business objectives, mentor a diverse and talented team, and deliver high-quality solutions that exceed client expectations. Location: Rockville, MD. Hybrid role with 2-3 days in office.


Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and oversee the strategic and operational aspects of the engineering department.
  2. Advocate for and implement efficient and innovative engineering solutions for clients.
  3. Manage the engineering team, providing guidance, training, and mentorship.
  4. Foster a collaborative and inspiring environment within the team.
  5. Coordinate with other department leaders to align engineering projects with business goals.
  6. Ensure all engineering projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client's specifications.
  7. Define key performance indicators for team productivity, project/product delivery and quality.
  8. Establish and maintain some mechanism for feedback.
  9. Ensure feedback is addressed in a timely manner.
  10. Apply quality assurance processes to deliver high-quality engineering services.
  11. Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies, utilizing this knowledge to improve services.
  12. Drive continuous improvement efforts while ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
  13. Keep overall team utilization and billability to target specified.
  14. Implement an action plan if numbers aren't to target.
  15. Ensure the team is trained to handle the needs of the market.
  16. Ensure the team is cross-trained so they are more likely to be kept utilized.
  17. Review and identify project risks for client projects and internal initiatives.
  18. Mentor and grow managers from within the team.
  19. Hire new managers, QAs, developers and other staff where needed.
  20. Interview new team members where needed.
  21. Capable of stepping into projects as needed to resolve blockers.
  22. Prevent the formation of knowledge silos.
  23. Improve/Maintain interdepartmental collaboration.
  24. Work with the R&D team on internal initiatives and manage the delivery of those initiatives.
  25. Determine and ensure that the needs of the engineering team in general are met.
  26. Be a sounding board for team members where necessary for technical and non-technical issues.
  27. Ensure teams are not being overallocated and attempt to mitigate burnout.
  28. Assess upcoming projects and impact on the current team.
  29. Assess team composition vs the needs of the organization.
  30. Resolve shortcomings within the team.
  31. Balance resources between internal initiatives with external client work.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or a related technical field.
  2. Proven experience in an engineering leadership role, preferably within a consulting environment.
  3. Strong project management skills.
  4. Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  5. Exceptional leadership and team management skills with the ability to inspire teams.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. A commitment to excellence and continued professional development.
  8. 2+ years of development experience at some point during the career.
  9. Familiarity with bash scripting, java, Jenkins, and DevOps.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Worked with Salesforce.
  2. Worked in consulting firms.
