POSITION SUMMARY
POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR SIGN ON AND RELOCATION PACKAGE
The Emergency Department Director provides strategic leadership and oversight for Emergency Services, including the Emergency Department. This role is responsible for advancing high-quality, patient-centered emergency care, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving innovation to meet the evolving needs of the community. The director works closely with medical staff, hospital leadership, and external partners to enhance emergency preparedness, improve behavioral health crisis response, and ensure operational excellence. Reports to the Senior Director of Inpatient Nursing Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required : Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a current Oregon nursing license; minimum of 5 years Emergency Department experience; with at least 2 years in a leadership role. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, implement change, and engage external partners; excellent communication, problem solving, and decision making skills.
Preferred : Masters of Science in Nursing or related field, Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification. Experience in emergency management, behavioral health integration, and community partnership development.
Lic/Reg/Cert : Current Oregon RN license.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Occasionally lifts 30 pounds or more. Frequent sitting and/or standing throughout the shift required. Must be able to work independently and lead in a dynamic, high pressure environment. Strong decision making skills in stressful situations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Strategic Leadership and Community Collaboration
Provides strategic direction for the Emergency Department to align with hospital and community needs.
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, including Trauma Program Coordinator, EMS, law enforcement, behavioral health providers, and public health agencies, to strengthen emergency preparedness and crisis response.
Leads initiatives to improve access to behavioral health resources and crisis intervention within the Emergency Department.
Represents Emergency Services in hospital leadership meetings and strategic planning efforts.
Quality and Process Improvement
Participates in hospital-wide initiatives to improve patient care, safety, and overall quality of services.
Develops and implements innovative care models to improve patient flow, reduce wait times, and enhance the patient experience.
Champions a culture of excellence in clinical quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
Partners with the Emergency Department Medical Director to shape policies, protocols, and care standards that reflect best practices.
Utilizes data analytics and clinical informatics to drive performance improvement and operational efficiencies.
Leadership and Staff Development
Supports and mentors emergency department leadership, empowering nurse managers to oversee daily operations effectively.
Maintains strong visibility in the department and engages with frontline staff to support professional development, morale, and retention.
Fiscal and Resource Management
Oversees resource allocation and budgeting to ensure cost-effective and high-quality emergency services.
Identifies opportunities for process efficiencies and financial stewardship while maintaining patient care standards.
