The Director of Critical Care provides strategic and operational leadership for the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit/Coronary Care Unit (CVICCU), Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), and the Central Telemetry Unit (TELE). This role will report to the Chief Nursing Officer and oversee two nurse managers.


The Director is accountable for delivering high-quality patient care across all assigned departments, ensuring optimal resource utilization-human, material, and financial. This position ensures compliance with all regulatory standards and organizational policies, including the creation and enforcement of department-specific procedures. The Director plays a critical role in driving customer, employee, and physician satisfaction, fostering a collaborative culture of excellence and continuous improvement.


Clinical and Operational Leadership

  • Oversees the Surgical ICU (SICU), Cardiovascular ICU / Coronary Care Unit (CVICCU), Medical ICU (MICU), Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), and Central Telemetry Unit (TELE)
  • Responsible for the staffing and skill level of ICU nurses, including the Rapid Response Program
  • Directs one or more major functional areas, departments, or business units
  • Manages professional and support staff, including subordinate managers
  • Responsible for the quality of patient care in assigned areas
  • Establishes and enforces department policies and procedures
  • Serves as the primary liaison for the department

Strategic Planning and Resource Management

  • Leads development and implementation of strategies to improve and standardize operations
  • Directs planning, implementation, budgeting, and expenditure tracking for major projects or initiatives
  • Collaborates with leadership to support the budget process and operational goals
  • Responsible for human, material, and financial resource management
  • Provides organizational recommendations to senior leadership

  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate policies

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a high-acuity/critical care setting
  • Experience with budgeting, staffing, quality, and interdepartmental collaboration
  • Bachelor's degree or in process of achieving degree
  • Current RN license to practice in South Carolina
  • Current BLS and ACLS required
