Director, Longwood Fellows Program

Longwood Gardens, one of the great gardens of the world, located in beautiful Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, just 30 miles southwest of Philadelphia, seeks an experienced, collaborative, and future focused leader of the Longwood Fellows Program. This prestigious, residential, leadership accelerator program is dedicated to developing the next generation of public garden leaders. With a global applicant pool and an active Society of Fellows comprising more than 200 alumni, the program offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and impact in the field of Public Gardens.

This role is crucial in advancing the development of future leaders in public gardens, overseeing the program's strategic direction and delivery, and ensuring an exceptional experience for Fellows. Reporting to the Vice President of Engagement and Learning, the Director will manage a team including 4 to 6 Fellows annually, a Fellows Administrative Assistant, and adjunct Faculty, with opportunities for future growth and scaling of the program to increase accessibility. The Director will have budget responsibility for the program.

With more than 1.6 million guests per year and growing, Longwood Gardens is the most visited paid public garden in North America and the most visited paid cultural attraction in the Philadelphia area. The property is comprised of 1,100 acres in Kennett Square and 505 acres in New Castle County, DE. This provides for hundreds of acres for guests to traverse complete with lush, formal gardens, a grand Conservatory, open meadows, fountain, and plant collections known around the globe, and vistas evoking the sensibility and aesthetic of the beautiful Brandywine Valley.

Longwood is an active public garden and a significant economic force in the greater Philadelphia region. Longwood Gardens is recognized as a vital part of the thriving arts and cultural community. With more than 300 full-time and 300 part-time employees, 80 students and seasonal workers, and 550 volunteers in this environment, Longwood Gardens is a dynamic workplace employing a dedicated and passionate workforce in support of its mission.

Longwood Gardens seeks a visionary and strategic leader with a passion for leadership development. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in Public Garden Administration, Horticulture, Nonprofit Business, Cultural Leadership and management or a related field. In addition, the next Director should possess a minimum of five years of leadership and administrative experience in a cultural institution or higher education; proven experience managing students, curriculum, faculty, partnerships, travel, and collaboration with diverse partners; demonstrated leadership with clear decision-making abilities, a keen eye for quality, and experience in budget administration; and the ability to travel domestically and internationally.
