Job Description

Work Environment


May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases; regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases; contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances; exposed to unpleasant elements, (accidents, injuries and illnesses); subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handles emergency or crisis situations; may perform emergency care; occasionally subjected to irregular hours; occasional pressures due to multiple calls and inquiries; requires judgment/action, which could affect patient outcome.

5 to 20 direct reports and 50-200 indirect reports.


Financial Responsibilities


Prepare and monitor departmental budgets.


Essential Functions


Establishes and implements unit goals and objectives in keeping with nursing administration and MUSC goals and objectives. Acts as a liaison between nursing and the medical staff. Promotes the Cardiology service line through involvement with the community and social service agencies to assure support. Markets the cardiology programs to medical staff, community, patients, families and other healthcare providers. Works with the strategy team on business plans to help grow the Cardiology program. Implements new programs and coordinates needed resources including staff, equipment, space, and physicians. Consults with staff, physicians and executive director with problems and interpretations of MUSC policy to ensure patient and staff needs are met. Establishes and maintains communication between service line, clinical departments and ancillary departments for the purposes of problem solving. Utilizes appropriate lines of communication within and between departments. Updates and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and environmental and infection control standards. Develops organizational structure; selects, trains, orients and provides overall supervision of assigned personnel; develops, recommends and implements operating procedures, systems and policies; reviews and evaluates performance and recommends personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions and disciplinary actions. Develops and monitors departmental budgets and is responsible for financial accountability on all of the assigned units. Assures compliance with all regulatory requirements including all state, federal, DHEC, CMS and TJC regulations related to the specific unit and MUSC Orangeburg. Supervises and evaluates all members of the invasive/interventionist team and cardiology team. Performs other miscellaneous duties as required by the Medical Staff, Chief Nursing Officer, Executive Director and hospital administration.

Physical requirements are primarily related to the essential functions of any job. In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to be mobile, to use hands, reach, talk, and hear.


Must be able to lift or exert energy up to 10 pounds 25% of the time and 25 pounds 50% of the time, 50 pounds 25% of the time.


Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors) and distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more).



Mental Requirements


Able to read, analyze and interpret complex scientific, clinical or business journals, financial reports or legal documents; respond to sensitive inquiries or complaints from guests, regulatory agencies, staff and member of the business community; write persuasive correspondence, speeches and articles for publication; effectively present information to top management, large public groups and boards of directors; work complex mathematical concepts related to probability, statistical inferences and to apply these concepts to practical situations; define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; deal with concrete and abstract concepts and interpret verbal, nonverbal and written instructions.


Population Served


This position primarily interacts with all age groups and provides direct patient care. All staff members must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to meet the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related needs of the persons in the assigned work area.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in nursing, currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina and five (5) years of related clinical experience to include three (3) years in a supervisory or management capacity; Master's Degree preferred.


OR


Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Technology with Advanced Level Cardiac Interventional Radiography, currently licensed in the state of South Carolina and five (5) years of related experience to include three (3) years in a supervisory management capacity; MHA preferred.


OR


Bachelor's degree and Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) and five (5) years of related experience to include three (3) years in a supervisory or management capacity; MHA preferred.


Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
