Join our Pediatric Endocrinology Department. We are a close-knit team of 5 specialized MDs, 3 APPs and multiple ancillary staff to include other Diabetes Educators, Social Workers, Triage Nurses, etc. Our team values and prioritizes collaboration to enhance patient care and seeks to maintain an environment that fosters clarifying communication, learning opportunities, team wellbeing and mutual respect.

The Diabetes Educator will work with an array of pediatric patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, predominately Type 1, and provide coaching to patients/families/caregivers of children with diabetes. Daily tasks include but are not limited to participating in daily team huddles, providing new onsite education, assisting with blood sugar reviews, assisting patients with starting technology, teaching virtual insulin pump class monthly, etc.

This team member will rotate with our outpatient (75%) and inpatient (25%) populations working at our Pembrooke and Parham Road locations as well as the Children's Pavilion every other week. The hours are Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm with occasional circumstances for longer evenings.

The Diabetes Educator provides Diabetes and Self-Management Education/Training (DSME/T) to patients with diabetes, including but not limited to: Type 1, Type 2, gestational and steroid-induced diabetes according to the existing standards of care.

Education includes, but is not limited to: signs/symptoms and respective treatments for hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis), HHNK (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic non-ketoacidosis) and sick day therapies.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or CDCES eligible within 18 months of employment and applicable clinical licensure required by the State of Virginia: a clinical psychologist, registered nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, podiatrist, master certified health education specialist, certified clinical exercise physiologist, registered clinical exercise physiologist, registered dietitian, dietitian nutritionist, or registered PA, with current, active and unrestricted license, certification or registration OR a minimum of a master's degree in social work from a United States college or university accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Certification as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) required within 18 months of date of hire and applicable clinical licensure required by the State of Virginia: a clinical psychologist, registered nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, podiatrist, master certified health education specialist, certified clinical exercise physiologist, registered clinical exercise physiologist, registered dietitian, dietitian nutritionist, or registered PA, with current, active and unrestricted license, certification or registration OR a minimum of a master's degree in social work from a United States college or university accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body

Experience REQUIRED:
1-3 years' experience in teaching DSME/T

Experience PREFERRED:
2-5 years' experience teaching DSME/T in an academic medical setting

Education/training REQUIRED:
Certification as a Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or CDCES eligible within 18 months of employment and applicable clinical licensure required by the State of Virginia: a clinical psychologist, registered nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, physician, podiatrist, master certified health education specialist, certified clinical exercise physiologist, registered clinical exercise physiologist, registered dietitian, dietitian nutritionist, or registered PA, with current, active and unrestricted license, certification or registration OR a minimum of a master's degree in social work from a United States college or university accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting body.
