The Dev/Ops Software Developer for AWS is a subcontract position to a nationally recognized firm specialized in Federal and State software development. The contract is with the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to modernize their IT system using Regent COTS products. The Dev/Ops Developer will be working with MHEC and the prime contractor as the key developer for this six-year contract. The contract has been executed and the Developer is needed as soon as possible to serve on the implementation team.
As a DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure in AWS, supporting both Linux and Windows-based workloads. You will manage Kubernetes (EKS) clusters, optimize CI/CD pipelines, and ensure high availability and security across multiple single-tenant environments.
Key Responsibilities Cloud & Kubernetes Infrastructure - Deploy, configure, and maintain AWS EKS clusters (Kubernetes v1.27+), including Linux and potential Windows node pools.
- Manage Linux-based nodes using Ubuntu 22.04+ / 24.04+ and ensure minimum node pool specifications (4 CPU / 16GB RAM / 128GB SSD).
- Oversee potential Windows Server 2019+ nodes if required for workloads.
- Set up QA/Dev clusters with optimized resources.
Compute & Storage Management - Maintain Windows Server 2019+ VMs (AWS EC2) for IIS/.NET applications and MSSQL/SSRS database servers.
- Ensure production and QA/dev environments meet resource requirements (CPU, RAM, SSD, Storage Pool support).
- Optimize cloud storage using AWS S3, and manage Redis v6+ (Elasticache), MongoDB v7+ (Atlas Mongo).
- Deploy Linux-based SFTP servers (CentOS v8.8+).
Networking, Security & Performance Optimization - Configure AWS WAF and Layer 7 Load Balancers (ALB/ELB) for traffic management and security.
- Implement AWS Secrets Manager for credential and certificate storage.
- Set up CloudFront CDN for content distribution and improved performance.
- Monitor system health using CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana.
CI/CD, Automation & DevOps Practices - Develop and manage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline.
- Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform or AWS CloudFormation to manage environments.
- Automate deployments, scaling, and recovery processes across multiple single-tenant environments.
Qualifications & Skills - Experience: 3-5+ years in DevOps, Cloud Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).
- AWS Expertise: Hands-on experience with AWS services like EKS, EC2, RDS, S3, ALB, IAM, CloudFront, and WAF.
- Kubernetes & Containers: Strong knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, and container registries (ECR/ACR).
- Windows & Linux Administration: Experience managing both Windows Server (IIS/.NET) and Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS).
- IaC & Automation: Proficiency with Terraform, CloudFormation, and scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
- Security & Compliance: Strong understanding of IAM, encryption, firewall policies, and best practices.
- Database Management: Experience with MSSQL, Redis, and MongoDB in cloud environments.
- Networking: Familiarity with load balancers, CDNs, and firewall configurations.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working with single-tenant SaaS applications.
- AWS Certifications (AWS DevOps Engineer, Solutions Architect).
- Experience with monitoring tools like Datadog, ELK Stack, or New Relic.
- Strong troubleshooting and performance optimization skills.

We have extensive experience supporting large prime contractors on Maryland contracts including the Department of Health (DOH), the Motor Vehicle Administration of Department of Transportation (DOT). This position will be a 1099 without any benefits. It is full-time and candidates from the DC, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) region would be preferred so that meetings with the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) can be held on their premises in downtown Baltimore. The position is open until filled.
