Development Manager Job Description

Primary Function

The Development Manager will support the organization's fundraising and grant-seeking efforts by preparing compelling grant applications, drafting grant program designs, and assisting in broader development initiatives. This role requires a combination of strong writing skills, strategic thinking, and attention to detail. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with program staff and leadership to align funding opportunities with the organization's mission and impact goals. The Development Manager reports directly to the Director of Development. This person must have a strong belief in the importance of the ICAN mission and the work we do, with a willingness to learn about and advocate for the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, regardless of prior experience in this field.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. The ICAN Development Manager will generally work Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm; or an alternate schedule depending on events during the week days and/or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be eligible to work legally in the United States
  • Must be able to maintain regular attendance and consistently arrive on time
  • Must have the ability to communicate with a variety of individuals including, but not limited to board members, donors, sponsors, and the public
  • Must be able to multitask and work independently
  • Must be able to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Must be an organized, flexible, detail-oriented, and dependable individual
  • Must follow all the rules and regulations listed in ICAN's Policy and Procedures Manual and ICAN's Code of Conduct and Ethics
Education, Experience, and Knowledge
  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2-4 years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on individual giving and/or event management
  • Must have strong computer skills and be comfortable using a computer regularly, including the use of Apple Macs, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and donor databases
  • Must have strong written communication skills - Ability to draft clear, concise emails, memos, and correspondence for internal and external audiences
  • Must be people-oriented with strong customer service and problem solving skills
  • Must have strong typing skills
  • Must be fluent in English and have strong/professional English writing and grammar skills
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or ASL a plus
Licenses and Other Requirements
  • Must have the ability to pass tuberculosis skin test
  • Submit to a fingerprint clearance through LiveScan before starting employment
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or be willing to complete CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must be CPI certified or willing to complete prevention-first training at hire
  • Must have reliable transportation. If using a private vehicle, valid California Driver's License or valid driver's license from another state at the time of hire and throughout employment with a clean three year driving record. Willingness to submit to DMV background check and provide evidence of current auto registration and liability insurance
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Working in indoor and outdoor environments, as well as traveling
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with leadership to set annual fundraising goals and develop strategies to achieve them.
  • Manage full range of activities required to research, prepare, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations and corporate sources including, but not limited to:
    • Conduct prospect research to identify new funding opportunities and assess their alignment with organizational needs.
    • Write and edit letters of intent, concept notes, and grant proposals for submission, including assembling all required documentation
    • Write, edit, and oversee the completion and submission of reports/presentations on existing grants
    • Track grants and funding in our donor databases, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
    • Generate reports and analyses to track fundraising progress, donor trends, and campaign effectiveness
    • Acknowledge and recognize funders through personalized communications and acknowledgments
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop strategic Grant Program Design & Fundraising Materials for all fundraising initiatives.
    • Assist in drafting new grant program designs for fundraising purposes
    • Collaborates with the development team and program teams to identify areas for programs to grow and develop strategic plans to meet those needs.
    • Collect success stories and testimonials across departments
    • Participates in the collection and tracking of quality metrics through use of reports, surveys, feedback, forms, and questionnaires
    • Write and update case statements, proposals, and impact reports for prospective donors.
    • Collaborates with the development team in creating the annual impact report and mid year update.
  • Support the coordination of fundraising events, including logistics, attendee management, and post-event follow-up
  • Participates in community outreach events such as chamber meetings and Community Based Organization boards to build relationships with local businesses and organizations
  • Attends ongoing training and education courses as needed
  • Performs other duties as necessary
