United Peace International (UPI), a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization based in Tokyo, Japan and San Jose California,is currently seeking a Japanese / English bilingual Development Director role to lead our fundraising efforts.
UPI tackles various social and environmental problems with the goal of achieving world peace via comprehensive reforms of the United Nations. The organization also strives to educate people around the world about peace and what it takes to get there. It is a US organization that is powered by main organizers from Japan.
The Development Director will play a crucial role in advancing UPI's mission by designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure the resources needed for our advocacy and reform initiatives. This position requires a strategic thinker with proven fundraising and/or business development experience who is passionate about global governance and peace. The ideal candidate will build and nurture relationships with donors, foundations and partners to sustain and grow our impact during a critical time for multilateral institutions. This role will report directly to the Director of UPI's USA office and based in San Jose, CA.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Fundraising Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising strategy aligned with organizational goals
- Create and manage annual fundraising plans with measurable objectives
- Identify and pursue diverse funding sources, including foundations, major donors, corporate sponsors, grants and crowdfunding
- Collaborate with Director and Board to establish fundraising priorities and approaches
- Build Development team as the organization scales
Major Gifts and Foundation Relations
- Cultivate and solicit major gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations
- Develop compelling cases for support that communicate our impact and vision
- Identify and research prospective donors with alignment to our mission
- Build and maintain relationships with existing and potential high-level donors
- Prepare and submit grant proposals to foundations and institutional funders
Development Operations
- Oversea donor database management and gift processing systems
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funders
- Develop and track Key Performance Indicators for the development department
- Manage the development budget and ensure cost-effective fundraising
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of fundraising, sales and/or business development experience with demonstrated success in securing major deals, gifts and/or foundation grants
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales and/or fundraising goals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong relationship building abilities with diverse stakeholders
- Strategic thinking and planning capabilities
- Ability to travel globally
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in fundraising for nonprofit organizations
- Understanding of the UN system, global governance and peace issues around the world
- Experience with international fundraising
- Demonstrated commitment to peace, justice and multilateral cooperation
- While not required, preference will be given to those who are bilingual in English and Japanese
- Given the nature of our mission, high integrity, honesty, and compassion are necessary qualities for this role

Compensation and Benefits
- Salary Range: $100,000 - $120,000
