2025 DEVCOM ARL Summer Student Experience: End-to-End Data Science Workflows on High Performance Computing Machines

Recruitment began on November 14, 2024, and the job listing expires on May 14, 2025.

Internship Focus: Exploring General Business & Beyond

The goal of this project is to investigate approaches for a distributed data processing and analysis pipeline on High Performance Computing (HPC) resources. The specific focus will be on containerizing services, GPU utilization, and exploring persistently running services. The project entails familiarizing with the current software stack, workflows, and analytic models. The interns will conduct a survey of data science capabilities, understand the HPC domain, implement data science services in a tool stack, and evaluate usability on the HPC resources. This involves prototyping various configurations for scaling analytical workflows on HPC systems and evaluating their effectiveness and performance. The interns will assess both model performance and runtime performance, and provide recommendations for future model design and tool deployment.

This internship requires extensive research on analytics approaches, previous programming experience, and the ability to quickly test and prototype applications. Interns will collaborate with the DEVCOM ARL DSRC Data Science team, gaining exposure to Army-specific use cases for this technology, and observing research and development processes. The project offers hands-on experience with state-of-the-art data analysis, processing, and visualization tools on HPC resources. The internship duration is 10 weeks, during which interns will research capabilities, understand the HPC domain, and conduct experimentation and analysis.
