Design Engineer III - Reading, PA

We have an immediate opening for a Design Engineer at our 621 Brentwood Drive location.
Hours are 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday

The Design Engineer will develop designs, generate product costing, and launch new products for customers. They will also make improvements to existing products, evaluate manufacturing processes for cost efficiency and ensure reliability of tooling designs. Works with cross functional team to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner and within budget. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish project goals related to new product industrialization. Delivers innovation solutions for product & tool designs for thermoforming and injection molding. Employees may perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to company policies, safety compliance, operational/quality procedures, and business ethic codes.
  • Work independently with customers to develop product designs for thermoformed and injection molded plastic products.
  • Develop effective tooling designs/specifications based on product application requirements, product volume and Brentwood manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to team members when required.
  • Provide the costing team with the required information for quoting.
  • Effectively communicating with customers about product designs and gaining design approval.
  • Understand the form, fit and function of Brentwood products.
  • Act as a project manager as needed and lead multi-disciplinary teams to plan, coordinate and execute projects from inception to production.
  • Working knowledge of the Brentwood operating systems and software (Syteline, PDM, etc.).
  • Design and implement tools to support the business processes for the DE team.
  • Take a hands-on development approach with prototype testing and validation as necessary.
  • Maintain all engineering project files with the most current information in the PDM system.
  • Conduct team meetings as needed to communicate project milestones with the customer and internal team.
  • Support the creation of Bills of Materials/Routings by providing necessary specifications.
  • Participate in trade shows, conferences and other events as needed.
  • Follow the Quality Management System (ISO-9001/ISO-14001/IATF-16949).
  • Follow all procedures/processes outlined in Brentwood's Product Industrialization Process.
  • Must be able to meet with customers and vendors both at Brentwood sites and/or their location.
Essential Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Engineering from a four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent command on English language (Oral & Written). Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to use appropriate engineering formulas and calculate the associated solutions to engineering problems. Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ERP Database software, Design and Development software, Solid Works, PDM, AutoCAD, etc., and Project Management software.
