Job Description
Under general supervision of the City Manager, performs a variety of highly skilled administrative secretarial duties in support of department functions.

Typical Duties Performed

(These examples do not include all the duties which may be assigned)
  • Provides general secretarial services to department staff, including City Manager. May be required to provide secretarial duties for commissions or committees.
  • Types a variety of complex forms, reports, contracts, and technical and general correspondence.
  • Schedules appointments; arranges conferences and meetings for City Council and City Manager.
  • Screens calls, visitors, and mail; answers inquiries regarding departmental policy and procedure.
  • Oversees clerical staff.
  • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related work duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: Current practices and procedures. Business English, including vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Ability to: Type accurately at minimum rate of 55 words per minute. Shorthand skills desirable. Demonstrate competence in the use of personal computers, specifically in word processing and spreadsheet software. Utilize quality customer service skills and techniques. Exercise good judgement, courtesy, and tact in receiving office calls and in using proper discretion handling issues. Think and work effectively under pressure.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible secretarial experience is required.

Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent is required.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required.

A valid typing certificate.

Supplemental Information
Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.
SELECTION PROCESS:

The City of La Mirada offers a competitive compensation and benefits package based on the adopted Appointments are normally made at the first step of a five step salary range. One year of City service is required to advance to the next pay step in the salary range.
