Summary

The University of Silicon Valley is seeking an innovative and collaborative Dean of Faculty and General Education Programs to lead faculty development and oversee the continued evolution of General Education offerings. This role will champion instructional excellence, provide strategic leadership in curriculum and instructional design, and foster cross-functional collaboration to support student learning outcomes. The Dean will work closely with academic leaders, instructional design, and support staff to drive initiatives that elevate teaching effectiveness and ensure high-quality, engaging learning experiences-particularly in environments with constrained resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Leadership and Faculty Oversight

  • Provide strategic direction for faculty development, engagement, and instructional quality across departments, with a focus on General Education.
  • Oversee hiring, mentoring, evaluation, and support of faculty, with an emphasis on continuous improvement and innovation in pedagogy.
  • Assign and coordinate faculty mentorship or specific professional training for new instructors each term as needed.
Instructional Design and Curriculum Leadership
  • Collaborate with support staff to ensure high-quality, learner-centered course design that aligns with USV's creative, career-driven mission.
  • Champion a culture of course consistency, accessibility, and instructional innovation.
  • Lead efforts to improve the general education curriculum, ensuring relevance to students in creative and technical fields (e.g., game design, animation, audio).
Resourceful Operational Management
  • Identify and implement creative strategies to achieve instructional and institutional goals within limited resources.
  • Optimize faculty workloads, instructional design timelines, and learning tools to improve efficiency and student outcomes.
  • Evaluate delivery models (e.g., asynchronous, HyFlex, synchronous) to ensure effective allocation of teaching talent.
Faculty Development and Orientation
  • Oversee the design and delivery of new faculty onboarding and ongoing development.
  • Ensure faculty receive training in Canvas, inclusive pedagogy, AI integration, and course assessment best practices.
  • Promote a reflective, data-informed teaching culture.
Strategic Planning and Assessment
  • Collaborate with the Provost and other academic leaders to set short- and long-term academic goals aligned with institutional strategy.
  • Use data and stakeholder feedback to assess curriculum effectiveness and guide iterative improvements.
  • Support program review and accreditation processes as needed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with student services, academic support, and department heads to promote a seamless academic experience.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for issues related to course design, general education, and faculty performance.
Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Education, Curriculum Development, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in curriculum development, faculty management, instructional design, and online pedagogy, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Expertise in using Canvas or similar Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a track record of leading successful curriculum initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to design and deliver effective professional development programs for faculty.
  • Commitment to innovation and excellence in online education.

Working Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment with people interaction. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and office machines. The employee will be requested to log hours worked in a system provided by the institution and track individual task assignments in another tool.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit for long periods; use hands and reach with hands and arms for such activities as keyboarding.
