Company Overview: The Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 (AIU8) is one of the 29 intermediate units that provides a vast array of services for member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs and services. IU8 includes four counties comprised of 35 school districts (approximately 98 schools) and five Career Technical Centers. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 serves approximately 47,000 students across four counties within 3500 square miles. Our service area includes four counties: Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria. We have five different office locations within our service area: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset. AIU8 has opportunities for everyone and our service area offers a broad range of living environments from rural to more densely populated city areas.
Job Summary: To ensure a safe, clean, comfortable, and presentable environment for the employees of Intermediate Unit 8, supporting their daily work.
Key Responsibilities: - Daily trash pickup
- Vacuuming
- Dry mopping (dusting) floors
- Wet mopping floors
- Stripping and finishing floors
- Buffing and treating of finished floors
- Carpet cleaning
- Cleaning bathrooms
- Dusting furniture and other surfaces as required
- Cleaning windows internally and externally
- Arranging furniture and equipment to meet the needs of Intermediate Unit personnel
- Compliance with material safety requirements
- Grass cutting and trimming
- Policing of areas
- Cleaning of parking lots, shipping and receiving areas and all walkways.
- Snow removal
- Treat all areas when ice or snow is present
- Summer cleaning of apartments and classrooms
- Change light bulbs
- Interior and exterior painting
- Follow any additional directives that the facilities manager deems necessary for the position of custodial/maintenance worker
- Demonstrate regular and timely attendance
- Maintain positive working relationships with other Intermediate Unit employees
Requirements: - Must be familiar with a multitude of custodial/maintenance equipment and procedures.
- Good interpersonal skills, willingness to work a flexible schedule.
- Must be able to follow all safety procedures and complete the Powered Industrial Truck (forklift) Operator Safety Training.
- Must be able to work unsupervised.
- Must be able to work together with others in the performance of daily custodial and maintenance duties
- Must be able to complete assigned work within appropriate timelines
- Must be able to follow written and verbal directives.
- Upon hire, all new employees must obtain a certificate of medical examination as well as a tuberculosis test under Chapter 14 of the Public School; Code, 24 P.s. 14-1418, 14-1418; 22 Pa Code 49.12(b) (regarding education); and 28Pa Code 23.44 (regarding health and safety).
- Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse History) Act 114 (PDE Fingerprinting), PDE6004 (Arrest & Conviction) and Act 168 (PA Sexual Misconduct background).
Desired Qualifications: - Experience in custodial and or maintenance of commercial buildings and grounds.
- Background in construction or construction education.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: - Normal office setting, storage areas and preschool classrooms.
- Exterior of buildings such as lawns, wooded areas, flat roofs, and parking lots.
- In the course of performing the duties and functions of Day-to-Day Substitute/Custodial Worker, the holder of the position will be required to stand, walk, sit, squat/stoop, reach and lift items of varying weights. Most activities involve walking and standing.
- Must be able to accurately perform assigned responsibilities and tasks.
- Demonstrate good communication skills appropriate to the position.
- Demonstrate attendance patterns and daily routine conducive to completing assignments and according to AIU8 expectations.
