Summary
The Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthesia under medical direction for diversified surgical cases, utilizing inhalation, intravenous, spinal or rectal agents. Emphasis in the work is on skilled application of appropriate professional techniques, constant review of anesthetized patients' condition during surgery, and completion of remedial measures to counteract unfavorable clinical conditions.
Responsibilities
- Participates and accurately documents patients pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation.
- Formulates a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care in collaboration with attending anesthesiologist.
- Implements, monitors and adjusts patients physiologic condition as appropriate for type of anesthesia and specific patients needs.
- Recognizes abnormal patient response to anesthesia and adjunct medications; takes appropriate action.
- Demonstrates ability to work in a stressful environment by prioritizing and implementing corrective action based on the situation.
- Provides observation, monitoring and resuscitation of patients in route to recovery room or to special care unit according to protocol.
- Provides concise comprehensive anesthesia report to recovery room or unit nurse according to protocol.
- Transfers the responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers post-operatively to assure continuity of care and patient safety.
- Supports operating room procedures.
- Keeps patient informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed.
Experience
- Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.
Education
- Master's degree in Nursing is required.

- Unit Specific Competencies: Must have clinical knowledge, skill and ability to fully and accurately complete all required unit competencies, as indicated in the unit competency check-list.
Credentials
- Valid Florida licensed RN/CRNA or eligibility for licensure as CRNA/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. National Board Certification by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are required.
- Must meet and maintain valid and current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by regulatory and/or nursing standard of practice for the specialty.
