Provides direct patient care in the emergency room setting under the medical direction of the on-duty ED physician. He/She coordinates care with other disciplines, consults with the family or significant others and collaborates with the physician on the patient's behalf. Able to triage safely, rapidly, and accurately, every patient that enters the emergency care setting. Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or response to treatment.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Demonstrates understanding and adherence to EMTALA laws.

  • Triages, prioritizes, and anticipates patient needs, developing an appropriate care plan.

  • Provides ongoing evaluation and alters the care plan as needed. Documents findings and interventions in the EMR.

  • Demonstrates competence in the clinical practice area.

  • Takes responsibility for professional growth and continuing education.

  • Communicates professionally, both verbally and in writing.

  • Maintains a professional attitude and work habits.

  • Educates patients, family members, and visitors as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates commitment to customer service.


Qualifications:

  • Current Certification as a Paramedic in the State of Iowa.

  • Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required within 6 months of hire.

  • Ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English.

  • Maintains BCLS certification and must obtain ACLS, PHTLS or ATLS, and PALS within 1 year of hire.

  • NRP certification is strongly encouraged.

  • Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter abuse training must be completed within 3 months of hire.


Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Emergency Medical Services.


Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Paramedic in a pre-hospital or hospital setting.

  • Basic computer knowledge and experience preferred.
