Position Peer Recovery Specialist

DescriptionUnder the supervision of a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor this position is responsible for providing support to individuals receiving treatment for substance abuse problems by providing hope, encouragement, and support through self-disclosure. Assisting clients in obtaining necessary medical and other services. This position is part of the multidisciplinary staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (this is not all inclusive)
- Meet with clients at service initiation for orientation and introduction to peer recovery support services
- Meet with clients on a regular basis, or as needed after the initial meeting, to discuss routine recovery issues from a peer perspective
- Provide direct assistance in the form of (i) transportation, (ii) filling out forms, (iii) making phone calls, (iv) accompanying clients to appointments and court appearances
- Assist in finding necessary community services to meet basic needs
- Perform outreach, follow up with non-residential program participants and help acclimate to recovery in their new surroundings
- Provide resources and education about support meetings, self-help groups, obtaining sponsorship
- Role model behavior that is consistent with, and supportive of people in recovery from chemical dependency, including upholding ethical standards and reliable attendance
- Assist in planning and supervising recreational activities for clients
- Serve as the contact person for in -house meetings, facilitate in-house alumni meetings and attend outside meetings with clients
- Maintain Confidential client records
- Attend weekly clinical staff meetings
- Receive supervision in areas specific to the domains of the recovery peer's role by an Alcohol and Drug Counselor on a weekly basis
- Assist in running of recovery residence
Position Requirements - Have a minimum of one year in recovery from substance use disorder; and
- Hold a current credential from the Minnesota Certification Board, the Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders, or the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors that demonstrates skills and training in the domains of ethics and boundaries, advocacy, mentoring and education, and recovery and wellness support.
- A recovery peer who receives a credential from a Tribal Nation when providing peer recovery support services in a tribally licensed program satisfies the requirement in paragraph (a), clause (2).
- Must be willing to submit to and pass a DHS Background Study
- Must have basic computer skills with the ability to navigate required documentation
