The Department of Performance, Play & Design (PPD) is a multi-disciplinary, academic unit of the University of California Santa Cruz. It houses three degree-granting programs in Theater Arts, Dance, and Games & Playable Media. As part of the curriculum, the Department supports productions of plays, dance concerts, and other performances and installations.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Operations and Facilities Manager, the incumbent will supervise all costume personnel (includes Wardrobe Technician as well as student employees and Theater - 50 students) and facilities. The Costume Shop Manager (with faculty) supervises all student designers in shop. Incumbent makes recommendations to designers regarding reuse of materials and existing stock items as well as providing collaborative input to all designers.

The Costume Shop Manager creates original costume, millinery and costume property designs when needed as well as consultative support to all designs in the costume shop.

Incumbent is responsible for all operations of the Theater Arts Costume Shop, dressing rooms and stock facilities. This includes all production support as well as planning, organization and maintenance of storage facilities and costume stock. Responsible for oversight of all makeup and hair used in departmental productions including providing advisory instruction to actors and production wardrobe staff.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $33.10 - $36.26 / hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

20% - Staff and Student Supervision
•  Supervise one part time career staff (Wardrobe Technician), and the work of student employees. Manage student hiring within the UCSC student job network including maintaining and completing all on-line timesheets for students and staff employees in the Costume Shop.
Oversee Wardrobe Technician and student technicians in the areas of cutting, stitching, wig-making, millinery and costume crafts.
•  Train and supervise student costume technicians (in accordance with Theater Arts academic goals, safety procedures and quality standards) during construction and production process. Advise students on special technical problems.
•  Coordinate IIPP (safety) training for costume shop staff. 20% - Purchasing & Budgeting
•  Act as the primary purchasing agent for the Costume department, manage Cruzbuy web purchasing system, and University Pro Card (credit card) accounts. Supervise purchasing of Costume Shop bulk supplies and materials, lab supplies, equipment, and production supplies.
•  Manage Costume Shop production, supply, and facilities budgets. Monitor expenditures for lab supplies, bulk production supplies, and special supplies. Operate accounting systems within the department, to give production manager actual expenditure reports for supply budgets and production budgets.
•  Assist student, faculty and professional designers with management of individual costume production budgets and use of University accounting procedures. Manage designers' purchasing and reimbursements. 20% - Shop Management
•  Coordinate and plan and all departmental costume activities associated with departmental productions. Attend production meetings, and oversee student designer progress. Coordinate rehearsal needs for student and faculty productions. Manage all rehearsal reports to maintain current design information for these productions.
•  Serve as liaison between directors and designers regarding costume design requirements (as stipulated by script or choreography) and their feasibility given departmental budget, staffing constraints, and production calendar. 15% - Costume Production
•  Supervise Wardrobe Technician, student employees and practicum students in the realization of costumes, costume properties, millinery, wigs and make-up for all Theater Arts Department sponsored productions, ensuring completion by production deadlines.
•  Originate costume production schedule and make recommendations concerning feasibility, time demands, and staff resources.
•  Serve a cutter on all department faculty productions. 10% - Costume Collaboration, Consulting, and Design
•  Provide consultation and collaboration to all designers working on departmental productions. Create original costume designs when needed by the department for productions, courses and representational items (for instruction or shop representation). Make design recommendations regarding reuse and recycling of in house materials and stock items.
•  Serve as primary liaison between Faculty Design Advisor and students in Costume Shop. When Costume Faculty Is not present, maintain advising presence in shop. 10% - Costume Stock Maintenance
•  Supervise loans to UCSC affiliated productions, pre-approved universities and regional theaters. Implement and enforce loan/borrow policies and procedures. Supervise staff and student assistants in charge of pulling and restocking costume storage.
•  Maintain Costume Storage plan. Supervise restocking costume storage, and overseeing staff in the restocking of costume storage and all costume supplies. Complete and maintain online photo database of costume stock.
•  Supervise and manage all department production strikes, with the help of staff and students. In charge of all costume maintenance including: dry cleaning, laundry, and accessories cleaning. Dry cleaning duties include maintaining the dry cleaning budget, the drop off and the pick up and re-stock of dry cleaned costumes. 5% - Facilities Maintenance
•  Maintain all costume facilities including Costume Shop and all support spaces (laundry, dye, crafts, and storage rooms, as well as all dressing facilities). Oversee all equipment maintenance needs for these areas. Project long-range equipment replacement needs and facilities maintenance requirements.
•  Participate in costume facilities up-grade projects by taking part in the planning, research and recommendation of types of alterations to support costuming activities as needed in existing and future facilities. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•  Education, or knowledge such as attained in upper division university coursework, in a related field.
•  Excellent demonstrated skills costume design, construction, draping and flat pattern making, fitting, and dyeing costumes, millinery and costume properties
•  Demonstrated skills in original costume design
•  Advanced knowledge of costume design history
•  Demonstrated skills with collaborative costume design projects
•  Demonstrated knowledge of basic theatrical makeup and hair techniques
