The San Diego County Water Authority is an independent public agency that serves as San Diego County's regional water wholesaler. The Operations & Maintenance DepartmentThe Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Department is responsible for operating the Water Authority's aqueduct delivery system; ensuring facility security and emergency preparedness; and maintaining and managing the fleet and various other assets. Specifically, the department controls water deliveries to meet member agency demands; manages dam and reservoir operations; ensures water quality; oversees water treatment plant and power generation operations; maintains all vehicles and heavy equipment; provides electro-mechanical support; implements the Asset Management Program (AMP); complies with all applicable environmental regulations; and develops and manages computerized Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and system maintenance programs.

The Position
The Water Authority is looking for a Student Intern in the Corrosion Control group. The recruitment will remain open until filled.
Student Interns receive real-world work experience in the field of water operations and prepare for job opportunities after graduation by obtaining professional work experience to build their resume. Students will gain an insight into the water supply business and the innerworkings of a multi-discipline operation. The Student Intern will work under direct supervision to support a professional staff in a high-performing, fast-paced environment. Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of Water Authority activities related to corrosion control, asset management and operations & maintenance. We are looking for individuals who are creative problem solvers with a desire to learn, enjoy working outdoors and seeing the tangible results of their work, are self-motivated, and are passionate about providing an essential service to their community.
The Corrosion Control group is responsible for gathering and analyzing data, troubleshooting, and implementing corrective measures to protect the Water Authority assets from corrosion. The group is also responsible for maintaining the Water Authority's corrosion control infrastructure, from coatings to cathodic protection. This position will be assigned to provide support both in the field and the office.
Corrosion control refers to the methods used to prevent metal pipes and equipment from deteriorating due to the corrosive nature of water and soil. As the Corrosion Control intern, you'll learn how to:
  • Provide field and site inspection support for corrosion control activities, including
    • Field survey and testing
    • Facility maintenance and construction
    • Pipeline and facility inspections
  • Perform office and administrative work, including
    • Analysis of field and testing data
    • Engineering drawing review
    • Data input using Excel or other software
    • Provide administrative support to professional and technical staff

Qualification Guidelines
Education Experience: Candidates must be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university at a junior or senior class level. Candidates pursuing a degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or closely related field are preferred. Student must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better in the last 60 semester units.
Skills and Job Knowledge: Candidates for this position should have a basic understanding of electrical theory and chemistry, be confident in mathematics, be willing to assist in light to moderate physical maintenance activities and be comfortable in areas with limited space for an extended period of time. Field activities could include the use of fine hand tools and/or large tools such as shovels for many hours on consecutive days. Other desirable skills include excellent oral and written communication skills, experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, Power Point, and Outlook), and broad computer literacy.

Licenses / Certificates / Special Requirements: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Water Authority's Vehicle Insurance Policy.
Working Hours: 15-20 hours per week (Monday - Thursday) during normal business hours. Normal business hours are 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Potential for more hours during school breaks.

Social Security / Medicare: Employees are covered under the provisions of Federal Social Security (OASDI) and Medicare Hospital Insurance (HI). The total employee contribution is 7.65% of salary.

Sick Leave: On July 1 of each fiscal year, student workers/interns will be credited with 40 hours of sick leave for use in the fiscal year (July 1 of a calendar year through June 30 of the following calendar year). An employee may use sick leave credits beginning on the 91st day after commencement of employment. Unused sick leave credits will not be carried over from one fiscal year to the next.
