General Description and Classification Standards
Supervises inmates in penal facilities in a specific area of assignment within the corrections/detention system. Duties include, but are not limited to: maintaining order and discipline within the facilities; supervising, escorting, and transporting inmates; patrolling assigned areas and inspecting buildings and inmate cells; controlling contraband and preventing escape; ensuring the safety of inmates and staff; assisting fellow officers; preparing logs, reports, and other documents; working to achieve the highest level of cooperation and to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of all departments within the City of Atlanta.
Supervision Received
Works under very general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.
- Patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infraction of rules, and unsatisfactory attitude or adjustment of prisoners.
- Reports unusual observations to superior.
- Conducts inmate head counts which may include jail facilities, court, and food.
- Escorts inmates individually or in groups to/from cell areas, visiting areas, or hospitals; and supervises inmates during meals and sick call.
- Assists in transporting prisoners when necessary.
- Ensures inmates with special needs receive required attention including those with contagious disease, those with suicidal tendencies, or special medical problems.
- Inspects buildings/cells while making rounds to ensure a safe, sanitary, and properly maintained facility.
- Inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors, and gates for tampering.
- Monitors base radio.
- Responds to inmates or employee emergencies.
- Responds to inmate requests for services, problems, questions, and grievances.
- Enforces all city and state codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations in order to protect life and property.
- Works to ensure the safety and security of the jail facility, which includes officers and inmates.
- Verifies inmate housing is properly assigned according to charges and medical problems; reclassifies and reassigns as needed.
- Guards and directs inmates during work detail assignments.
- Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes.
- Oversees housekeeping of the facility.
- Operates the Department's Central Control; monitors closed circuit television cameras.
- Controls the progress and access within the jail.
- May issue personal hygiene items to inmates.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
