Job Description:
Saybrook University seeks a Core Full-time Faculty Member to join the College of Integrative Medicine and Health Sciences (CIMHS) and the Department of Integrative Social Work (ISW). Full-time core faculty members are dedicated to engaging in each of the following areas: Instructional Design and Curriculum Development, Student Mentor and Program Planning Support, Research and Scholarship and/or Professional Practice, University Learning Experiences (ULE), Dissertation Committees, and Departmental Administrative Support, including serving on university-wide committees, projects, and initiatives. These areas and the time allotted to each will depend on the final determination of the workload system adopted by Saybrook University and the Department Chair.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
I . Instructional Design & Curriculum Development
• Demonstrate command of subject matter in courses taught and administer assignments, exams, etc., that assess and continuously evaluate student progress, course effectiveness, and learning outcomes and adjust teaching strategies accordingly
• Demonstrate subject matter expertise specific to the Department of Integrative Social Work curriculum requirements ( refer to the Qualification Requirements section below)
• Design and teach graduate-level courses
• Classroom instruction includes lectures, demonstrations, discussions, or other appropriate modes of education delivery in higher education via in-person and/or virtual formats
• Incorporate innovative teaching methods, technologies, learning styles, and program assessments that enhance andragogical learning and create a culture of inclusivity for a diverse student population
• Prepare course syllabi and plans following university and department requirements
• Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support learning outcomes and encourage engagement
• Assess and revise course and program learning outcomes as needed
• As a subject matter expert, collaborate with the department chair and leadership for the shared approval and retention of the design, development, and implementation of the degree curriculum
• This includes developing new courses, updating current courses, and selecting appropriate textbooks and teaching aids as required
• Ensuring the curriculum is current and aligned with the latest advancements in the respective field
• Vetting, discernment, and shared approval of technology utilized to improve course delivery in a largely virtual environment
• Ensure course content and teaching methods are inclusive and reflective of diverse perspectives and backgrounds
• Create a safe and inclusive classroom environment II. Student Support
• Faculty Advising : Advise graduate students and maintain a faculty advisee load according to the department's needs. Faculty advisors assist students with understanding pedagogy and course sequencing and support optimizing individual program plans to ensure student success and alignment with future career goals and interests.
• Faculty to Student Mentorship: Faculty support students in their professional development via mentorship of academic, curricular, research, and career pursuits.
• Office Hours: Hold scheduled office hours or allow students to schedule 30-minute appointments through Saybrook's calendar platforms (e.g., Calendly or Microsoft Office).
• Student Wellness: As a humanistic institution, Saybrook faculty are committed to ensuring student safety and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging (DEIB) across the university.
• Student Resources: As needed, initiate appropriate referrals to resources for academic, physical, mental, and emotional wellness. III. Research, Scholarship & Professional Practice
• Saybrook University and its faculty are dedicated to excellence and innovation in various ways in research, scholarship, and professional practice. Some examples include but are not limited to the following:
• Scholarly publications
• Speaking engagements (webinars, workshops, lectures, presentations, conferences, etc.)
• External board activities
• Funded projects, grants, and contracts
• Content Creation (new course/program development, revisions, web development, continuing education, etc.)
• Use of subject matter expertise (e.g., consultant, journal editor, reviewer for referred journal, peer reviewer of grants, speaker, service to government agencies, professional and industrial associations, educational institutions)
• Active engagement in relevant integrative healthcare practice, supervision, consultation, or mentorship
• Application of research and scholarship in the field
• Other global impacts and creative accomplishment(s)
• Pursue continuous professional development to maintain subject matter expertise, such as attending conferences and engaging in scholarly activities. IV. Dissertation Committee Work
• Saybrook's Doctoral Dissertation committees comprise of three key components, Chair, Methodologist and Reader. Core ISW faculty may be asked to serve in one or more of these roles at any given time. A strong academic background in theory, practice and application of knowledge and skills are critical elements when serving on dissertation committees.
• Mentor students by guiding topic exploration, research question development, timeline management, writing expertise, IRB submission, and methodology assistance
• Dissertation Committee responsibilities are described in the Dissertations Policy and Procedures . Ensure that all dissertation activities comply with university guidelines and ethical standards for research V. Departmental Support
• Participate in department meetings.
• Involvement in prospective student selection processes.
• Mentor adjunct faculty members and teaching assistants.
• Collaborate with administrators (Deans, Associate Deans, Chairs, Associate Chairs, and Specialization Directors/Coordinators) and leadership around department planning.
• Engage in department processes and initiatives.
• Working closely with Saybrook's admissions and advising teams. Service to the University and Community
• Faculty engage in university and community service in a variety of ways. Examples include but are not limited to the following:
• University Related Service
• University Committees: Contribute to departmental, college, and university committees and sub-committees (e.g., WSCUC)
• Governance (e.g., Faculty Senate)
• Accreditation
• Institutional Review Board (IRB)
• Search Committees
• Professional Service Outside of the University (e.g., Boards, committees, etc.)
• Viable Contributions to the Field of Social Work Education through Organizations such as National Association of Social Work (NASW) state chapters and Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE)or any relevant organization that contributes to the field of social work.
• Community Service
• Engage in activities that promote the university's role in the community
• Participate in professional organizations and activities that contribute to the faculty's respective field(s) Required Qualifications
• Must have primary U.S. residency
• Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution in a field relevant to social work, humanities and social sciences.
• Earned master's in social work education (MSW) from a fully accredited CSWE institution with a minimum of 2 years post MSW work in the field.
• Subject-matter knowledge is demonstrated in one or more areas: Integration of social work through theories, practice and the application of knowledge and skills. What it means to be a reflexive scholar and researcher and key knowledge and understanding about the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, social and environmental factors across all disciplines.
• Strong commitment to the vision and goals of Saybrook University
• Commitment to excellence in teaching, social theory and research
• Firm understanding of CSWE's mission, values and core social work principals.
• A distinguished record of scholarly achievements, including research publications and/or other contributions to the area of the program specialization.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate within an academic community and work in interdisciplinary settings
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external partners
• Promotes interdisciplinary working within and beyond the department
• Commitment to DEIB principles and supporting diverse learners
• Mastery of Office 365 suite
• Mastery of APA 7 publication style and subsequent iterations.
