Job Description

The Coordinator of the Vassar After School Team (VAST) oversees the programmatic, administrative, and evaluative aspects of an after school tutoring program in collaboration with the Poughkeepsie Middle School and middle school students in the broader community. The Coordinator works in collaboration with the Office of Community-Engaged Learning (OCEL) and Vassar Education Collaboration (VEC) staff to develop and implement educational training programs for tutors, including supervising work-study students and volunteers. This is a limited term, one-year position with the possibility of renewal/extension for an additional year.

The OCEL aims to build long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships with community organizations in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, and the greater Hudson Valley. By developing and centering partnerships, the OCEL provides students with the opportunity to learn alongside community partner organizations and make real-world connections to enhance academic experiences. One of the core programs of the OCEL is the VEC which aims to build school-based partnerships between Vassar College and the City of Poughkeepsie School District (PCSD). The programs are designed to increase educational opportunities for public school students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Responsibilities:
  • Support existing partnerships with the Poughkeepsie City School District and other tutoring program teachers, staff and families and explore new partnerships with local community-based organizations that support in-school based educational supports.
  • Collaborate with Exploring College Coordinator and OCEL Staff on all related educational programming, including summer programming, development and designing educational training curriculum for VAST interns and VAST mentors, and creating ongoing academic and enrichment materials.
  • Recruit, interview and enroll Vassar students to participate in the program as volunteers, through Community-Engaged Learning and/or work-study.
  • Coordinate with teachers, staff, and families to advertise the program to potential VAST scholars.
  • Assist OCEL Director in collecting assessment and reporting for VAST programming efforts.
  • Serve as onsite supervisor for the after school program and maintain the safety of both VAST scholars and mentors and PCSD facilities. Arrange transportation and drive to and from Poughkeepsie Middle School for VAST mentors and scholars.
  • Collaborate with OCEL's communications team to ensure students, families, mentors and PCSD staff are updated.
  • Perform additional tasks to support the program operations.


Required knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree or other equivalent experience.
  • Interest in and familiarity with any of the following: community-based work, curriculum and program development, educational pedagogy, after-school tutoring, and community-engaged learning.
  • Strong facilitation, program planning and curriculum development skills.
  • Proven organizational and program planning skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, inclusive pedagogy, and educational equity
  • Demonstrated ability to engage productively with varied constituencies, including college students, PCSD administrators, youth, families, and community partners
  • Must be self-motivated, organized and take initiative.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive data with integrity and the utmost discretion and respect for confidentiality.
  • Vassar College graduate or knowledge of Vassar College/ Poughkeepsie/ Dutchess County.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
