Salary: $3,317.00 - $4,410.00 Monthly. The salary does not include an additional 5% premium granted to all King County employees, a 5% on-site 24/7 facility premium, or a 3% general wage increase and a 2.5% targeted position increase, effective July 1st, 2025.
The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is accepting applications for a Cook 2 to direct oversight of all nutritional programming so youth have the nutrition needed to support their health and ability to follow their treatment program.

The Opportunity:
You will supervise and participate in the preparation of meals for residents, including supervision of residents, kitchen maintenance, safety, and inventory at Echo Glen Children's Center. Additionally, you will inspect the preparation of food to ensure the proper quantity, quality, and handling and instruct and train employees/resident kitchen help in cooking, preparing, and handling food consistent with health requirements. As this position is located in a kitchen environment, you may stand for long periods of time, lifting, and conducting repetitive tasks. As programs permit, you may also supervise and monitor residents working in the kitchen. If you're passionate about feeding youth, then we'd love to meet you.

Some of what you will do:
  • Participate in preparation and service of food on the assigned shift.
  • Oversee, delegate, and instruct food preparation duties to Cook I, Intermittent Cooks, Food Aides, and resident kitchen aids.
  • Prepare food following standardized recipes.
  • Inspect food being prepared to ensure the proper quantity, quality, and handling.
  • Instruct and train employees and resident kitchen help in cooking, preparing, and handling food consistent with health requirements.
  • Ensure daily inspection of refrigerators, freezers, hot carts, and steam tables for proper temperature control.
  • Operate and maintain all standard and industrial kitchen equipment in a large-scale kitchen environment.
  • Instruct delegate and supervise the use of the kitchen equipment.
  • Ensure cleaning of kitchen, dining area, utensils, and equipment.
  • Receive and put away food supplies.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment and report repair needs to the food manager.
Required qualifications:
Six months of demonstrated cooking experience.
OR
Completion of a course in large-scale cooking.

A current Food Worker card.

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
  • Experience in preparing and cooking food in an institution or institutional camp.
  • Possess expertise in providing services to urban youth and have an understanding of juvenile offender behavior.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with management, peers, clients, and the public as required to carry out the assigned duties of the position.
